I made this and I think we should have a fanart thread.

Flag of Australatina.

Puerto Rico flag quartered a la Australian flag.
Puerto Rico stripes inversed so the reds don't touch.
Southern Cross represented in right half, but star shapes are changed to the 5-pointed star instead of the 7-pointed star a la Republic of China flag.
Republic of China's Sickle and Hammer star represented instead of the Australian star in left bottom quadrant.

I also changed the color of the bright blue present in Puerto Rico's flag to this odd navy blue color. In Communist flags, especially Soviet inspired ones, only have three different colors: Gold, white, red, and navy blue. See DPRK and other Communist party flags.

Religious Affiliation in the People's Republic of Australatina​

Australatina is a communist nation that has always been rather conflicted about religion. Periods of persecution and enforcement of an Atheistic state has simultaneously reinforced the mindset of believers while at the same time promoting a large non-religious population. Roman Catholicism is the main religion practiced in Australatina, being the religion of a large portion of the populace, a legacy of the Spanish rule over the region. Protestantism has been small, but important minority in the region, as the region of Ciscadia was originally a British colony that the nation of Australatina annexed during the Napoleonic Wars. Besides these two religions, West African communities also practiced Santeria, a secretive syncretic religion that combines traditional beliefs with Christianity. Alongside these three religions was also a fairly large community of Jews, primarily Sephardim who escaped from Spain and made new lives in the region.

Indian immigration was often regular to the region throughout the early to mid 20th century, and with them came a variety of religions. Of particular note is the large presence of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, as well as the large Hindu population, including a small outpost of the traditional Bengali Satya Dharma. Islam remains the main growing religion from the region in this age, with Shia immigration causing friction with the larger traditional Sunni population.

Newer religions that came to the region include the Jesus Army, Wicca, Tenrikyo, and the LDS Church. In the case of the Charismatic Movement and Mormons, this was in response to a recent opening of borders commissioned by the nation in an attempt to restore relations with the West in the 1990s. Tenrikyo was primarily the result of the small but important Japanese community in the state, who often wield significant authority, including having one of their own becoming General Secretary of the nation. Wicca on the other hand was the product of the cult of personality around La Pantera, the main military and leading figure figure in the communist regime throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Recently, news of ethnic cleansing and pogroms have leaked out. Hindus, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, and Jews have been targeted by the government to extradite or exterminate. This was done on the orders of ultra-nationalist and hardliner Philip Delici, the current strongman behind the country. This has condemned by the UN, and calls for an intervention in the country are increasingly being brought up, with even longstanding allies to the Hermit state Russia and China being muted in response to the situation. Intervention is especially being considered as many Ciscadians, which has long been a rather unruly part of the country, has protested the government and showed solidarity behind the victims of this pogram. Calls for independence have flared up again, much as it did during the Southern Intifada of the 1980s.

That's a good question, actually. I think Phil just has such a simplistic understanding of Latin American culture that he can only recognize the elements of it that are widespread knowledge. For instance, it's a widely known fact that the majority of Latin America speaks Spanish. So Phil starts trying to speak butchered Spanish and gets crappy tattoos in broken Spanish. It's a widely known fact that the majority of Latin America adheres to Catholic Christianity, so Phil starts using Catholic iconography.

You've got to remember, Phil is a very arbitrary man.

I wouldn't be surprised if Phil still partly self-identifies as Christian in some sense or another. I suspect, like many Americans, he was raised in an at least nominally Christian household, even if they rarely went to church, and Phil (being Phil) may be too scared to abandon something he was raised with. We know he apparently self-identified as a Republican in high school. In fact, whatever weird distorted things Phil believes about Christianity and Christians may filter down into his own persecution complex ('dey hate me cuz I'm a beautiful trans-latinx womenz'). I've said before one of his points for conversion to Judaism seems to have been the belief that Jews don't persecute homosexuals; ironically, he seems to be mooching off the Lutherans now, and they are a denomination known for being fairly liberal on social issues.

Anyway, as for Catholicism in Australatina, yes Phil seems to operate on stereotypes. If it's Latino, then it must be Roman Catholic. Therefore, he incorporates (or perhaps appropriates is more accurate in this case) various elements of Catholic imagery to feed into his weird Latino fetish. I suppose its better than draping everything in sombreros and cactuses. He also appears to be stealing elements of his country from real life statistics, most likely about Mexico, because that and Puerto Rico are the only Hispanic countries he seems to fixate on. The fact that the Catholic Church is fairly conservative, and anti-LGBT, is entirely lost on him. On the other hand, he'd probably appreciate the whole Spanish Inquisition given his hatred for the Jews.

The real irony is that Phil is so terminally unoriginal that he can't fathom creating his own statistics and demographics for his fictional country. He could make it a perfect Communist paradise. He could ban religion altogether, or make up his own churches. Instead he just copies what he already knows. The same with road signs, which we know he's interested in.
