The "Great Work" reference by Vordrak reminded me of something that I never mentioned here because it didn't seem relevant: GG and AGG both have an active occult minority working within them, though you wouldn't likely notice if you weren't aware of occult lingo.

On the liberal/SJW side it's Wicca and Discordianism, on the right wing/GG side its these plus Setian/Satanism and so on. There is an active effort right now to subvert /pol/ and other right wing websites with this stuff, filling in the gap left by Christianity waning in popularity. Thats where all the "Black Sun" talk is coming from, for example. Discordianism specifically teaches "meme magic". Iirc, Zoe Quinn is active in or dabbled in this stuff, though I don't have a source for that right now. Most of the West Coast Trustafarians are into this stuff in some form or another, you'll often see it at hippy-oriented festivals. Tommy Tooters Rainbow Family also tends to indulge in similar "nature magic", albeit with a Christian flavor.

If this topic stays up I plan to use it as a place to identify and discuss possible occult references by GG/AGG/lolcows/etc without derailing individual threads.

This isn't about whether occult stuff is "real" or if it works, I just want a place to observe and converse about cows that think it is.

Yeah, I wasn't sure where to put it exactly. CW seems much less serious than here (distractingly so), inner circle is all shitposting, and I don't have much in the way of links as its been years since I became aware of all this. Also everyone I'm going to be commenting on already has a lolcow thread here, which seems to be the opposite of how CW threads usually work. Whatever the mods decide will work for me.

The idea of different consciousnesses is complex and difficult to describe. All of this stuff allegedly works on a level beyond words, just as Zen does.

"Magic", or effective prayer, supposedly requires a trance like state of mind that is often referred to as Grace. Zen no-mind, Taoist child-mind, there are many names for it. Reaching this state of mind is, in Tantric (and Tibetan) Buddhism, a large point of the chanting mantras and meditation, for example.

The end goal is knowing yourself and defeating the shit in your head that holds you back, the inner voices, the guilt, the fear. Those who want to impose their will take it further after getting to that point. "Magic" is less "cast a spell and get what I want" and more "by focusing awareness and being hyper vigilant I can achieve my goals easier". Its supplimental to effort, not a replacement. Not every "magician" realizes any of this, though.

This quest to see ones "true nature" or form is what Buddhists refer to as Enlightenment.

Think of it this way:

Normal consciousness says "I am me, you are you, and they are they." A separation from one to another.

Higher Consciousness says "I am you, you are me, they are us" and makes no interpersonal distinction. All are equally part of the universe (or God or spirit world or whatever).

So those who are on a higher Consciousness trip are forced to either leave human life behind completely and just meditate, or adjust to a life lived on two levels: one where you recognize mundane human needs because everyone else thinks they are someone other than you, and a spiritual one that realizes everyone you meet is a reflection of the divinity within yourself.

There are more levels of awareness than these, but this is considered the starting point.

From an occultist perspective, what do you think of the alt-right's conception of "meme magic", a sort of collective sympathetic ritual where endlessly reposting crude drawings of a person or phenomenon as a sad frog or anime girl is used as a way to lend them power?

It seems to me largely a sort of crude sigil magic that tries to counter the natural tendency of magic towards a teeming mass of coincidence and interconnection via Dadaist anti-art negation. Effective assuming the conversation ends.
