Having Autism justifies everyone being a prick to you.

The principal's response is the most disgusting part about this in my opinion. I mean the parents could be pricks, that's obvious. But the Principal being an asshole is one of the worst things I've ever heard.

I think the principal had a point. The news people were mostly going on about the online bullying that the principal should have stopped. I don't see why it's up to the school to police and punish the kids actions outside the school on the internet. Obviously the school should work to stop bullying at the school, but things outside the school it's up to the parents or kids to stop it.

I really don't agree with this school's policy on bullying. If the staff isn't going to intervene when bullying is occurring, what makes you think the kids will? That kind of system pretty much makes it so that those who can't defend themselves are left at the mercy of those stronger than them.

As for the autistic kid in question, while I do agree that they shouldn't have uploaded videos of him being bullied, I sorta wonder if he really did call people nasty names. I mean yes, considering he's autistic, he may not have good social cues, but there is a chance that he probably was being an asshole towards other people and got himself into trouble.

This is coming from someone who also has autism and acted like a little asshole during his school years. Autism doesn't excuse you from being an asshole. Just ask our pet lolcow.

Either way, the kid probably didn't deserve all the treatment he got.

Agreed, though some of the online stuff went on via school computers too according to the article TYT linked to, so maybe that needed monitoring. Stuff done outside of school needs to be monitored and stopped by the parents.

Heh. The minute you decide to stand up yourself, even if it means punching someone, YOU'RE the one who gets in trouble and get lectured on why you have to talk to an adult instead of fighting.

Yeah, this kinda pisses me off about elementary schools. Kids pick on you, you tell them to stop. They don't, so you go to a teacher. Teachers says you're "tattling", which basically means they don't want to get involved, and they're annoyed with you for bothering them. So you have to take matters into your own hands. Do that, and you get in trouble for NOT being a pussy.

I dunno... has the "stop all bullying" trend finally superseded the "no tattling" battlecry?

It tells me that you paid him to do it. :pickleman:

Our high school could block access to sites like Myspace. The principal could have tried that. The only problem is most of the kids might know how to use a proxy to circumvent the filters.

It's this kind of shit giving a message to all kids to not report to authorities for crimes that happen in life when they grow up. Besides this, it's also makes the "weak" have shitty school lives that will affect them for the rest of their time on this Godforsaken Earth.

Well, apparently autism CAN cause people to act in a way, that justifies some degree of trolling/bullying.

Any other conclusion would be astoundingly hypocritical, considering the nature and contents of this forum/site.
(Obviously aside from the fact that the kid is ten in the story...)

Biggest A-holes in the story are the nauseatingly self righteous "anchors" trying to spin the story to fit their angle and identify a bad guy..

Is bullying good and alright? Nope, but the principal/school should stay out of their students life outside of school. And a lot depends on the exact nature of the bullying taking place. It certainly sounds like there's two sides to this story.

(And obviously, online bullying could easily be solved by the bullied kids parents, who are also to blame. He's TEN! Any particular reason you apparently give a ten year old free reins on the Internet, and let him go to whatever sites he wants to? Take away his internet, give him a WiiU, and the problem with online bullying is solved!)

idk, from what I've seen, people who are bullied more than likely deserved it, and even so, it's not too bad. But that's just my anecdotal experience.

I was just like you when I was a child. Does that mean we're kindred spirits?

But in all seriousness, this is pretty irresponsible on the school's part for not nipping the ordeal in the bud.

When you remove the ability of society to self-correct (through mockery and other forms of "bullying") then you get people like Chris-chan. Obviously autism is an issue as well but poor socialization is a major aggravating factor.

You almost never see people change their behavior because of the power of a superior argument, but you see people change their behavior all the time to avoid being made fun of. Sometimes it's better to let the weird kid be sad for a few days and then learn not to be weird than to be coddled all his life, alienate everyone with his weirdness and then die friendless and alone.

You can target hate-crime type status based bullying for special consideration without extending the blanket condemnation to behavior based teasing. People always miss the nuance, especially when it comes to schools. Not all "bullying" is equivalent. Driving a gay kid to suicide =/= making fun of the weird kid for speaking an imaginary language in public until such time as he stops. And don't even pretend that you can't tell the difference.

Now I'm not saying what these kids did was right, but to characterize the parents who are pointing out that it's not like this kid was some innocent minding his own business as pricks is kind of a dick move. You can't blame the parents for telling their kids side of the story after a news report tries to paint them as monsters. I wonder how you'd react if your kid was in class with a CWC and the media was trying to portray him as the innocent victim of your nefarious spawn. "Bullying" is just one of those buzzwords that are like wind-up keys for dumb people.

P.S. if the kid is so autistic that he has outbursts without "knowing what he's doing" then he shouldn't be in a normal class terrorizing the other students. What the hell do you expect?

Ya know something, brother? Sometimes one has to stop feeling sorry for themselves and do something to change a situation. Bullying is never cool, man, but the term is being overused. If one is being a dumbass and they get called a dumbass, that isn't bullying, man.

They’re hitting him upside his head. You know, smacking him. Just, um, the teachers are aware of it. A lot of them turn their backs,' said Levi’s mother, Dawn Simmons.

'People tell me to run into things and I don’t really like it. And I tell them that I don’t want to and they just laugh at me, whenever I do it,' said Levi Null.

The story caused outrage when it was aired by Who TV, earlier this week.

But now the parents of the accused teenagers have defended their offspring's actions.

'I would say three-fourths of this stuff he brings on himself and probably a fourth of it is bullying that shouldn’t be going on,' said Levi Weatherly, father of the teen accused of posting the video online reported Yahoo News.

The station reported that after they aired the story they received more comments defending the students.

Jamie Harrison wrote: 'He called my nephew a nasty name and my nephew Cole cocked (sic) him in the mouth. I`m proud of my nephew for doing that.'

Nate Goof wrote: 'This kid has done things to get people mad that I think he could probably control.'

Levi's mother even reported that she had become a target of online bullies.

Principal Josh Ehn says the students who made the video have been disciplined and the video was destroyed.

He told Who TV: 'We try our best to educate our staff, educate our students to react to the cases and investigate the cases that we have but ultimately it’s gotta come down to the kids to take ownership of this and to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.'
