What do you look for in avatars? Like, are there any common threads in the pictures you use?

I like taking weird/grim art and putting a black border around it. It being in black and white or pertaining to bands and films I like also helps. But that's just me.

I just use images I like. Some such as: an uncanny valley MLP image, a Wizardry 8 portrait that would make one think I'm some furry, and the mafioso character I used a few weeks back. Really, most I'd do in an edit is just resizing the image if it's too big.

I try to keep it to pictures related to my handle. My original avatar was Tom Cruise at some very unflattering angles of him laughing. And now at the moment I'm using this shot from Hausu.

really fighting the urge to use Immortan Joe though...

All the avatars that I've ever used here (there's only like three) have been of mourning doves, to match my username. This current one is my Secret Santa gift of Nageki Fujishiro apparently crossdressing and crying.

Size ratio is a big thing, how does it look when sized really small compared to it's normal size. I have a big avatar folder on Steam that I mostly just remove avatars from now.

Other than that in recent years i've started to transition into using birds like Owls in my avatars. Like the one I'm using now here.

Depends on the forum tbh, but I tend to prefer simple, clean imagery.

I normally use images stolen from Pixiv or Nico Nico Seiga that I edit slightly. Pretty often I use subtle inmu meme references just to amuse myself. I've got a habit of changing avatars frequently, in places where I'm more active than this I normally switch every Tuesday. Not sure how this custom started but I've been doing it for so long that some of my buddies on the online have started doing it too.

I've had this most recent one for a couple of weeks now, it was a bit of an experiment because I usually only crop square images. The farms has rectangular avatar support so I decided to try it out. I got lazy so I just cropped a screenshot of some gay anime.

I primarily use avatars from video games, this one is from the Divine Divinity avatar bonus pack from gog.com. Sometimes I use an image of my cat or take a closeup snapshot of my avatars in one of the mmo's play. It is whatever I find appealing or cool at a given moment.
