Anime paints a particular picture Japan's hikikomori population. They're often the stars of isekaiseries, leaving behind a solitary life of junk food consumption and video games to go on a grand adventure. Alternatively, sometimes they're featured in rom-coms like Eromanga Sensei as hermit-like artist types. In either case, hikikomori are high school or college dropouts, young adults shown to be squandering their gifts and youth with a bad attitude towards the rest of society. This outlook is usually depicted as something could be fixed with the right social or romantic connections.

Like most fiction, this simply isn't a true representation of hikikomori and their struggles. In 2014, Asaichi, a Japanese news program on NHK, discussed the growing population of middle-aged hikikomori, spotlighting that this isn't merely a phase young adults go through while adjusting to their new independence.

A new survey conducted by KHJ Zenkoku Hikikomori Kazokukai Rengōkai (KHJ National Hikikomori Association of Families Federation) revealed the average of hikikomori is 34.4 years old, four years higher than the average compared to 10 years ago. There are approximately 80 families taking part in the association in the Kochi prefecture branch. One family includes a mother with a son who has lived as a shut-in for many years. She stated that she wonders what will happen to her son if she dies.

The higher age of hikikomori also means an increased age in their family members turned caregivers. In March, KHJ released a statement explaining the "8050 problem" where parents in their 80s are responsible for caring for their unemployed 50-year-old children using their own retirement pensions. KHJ is hoping to alleviate some of that responsibility.

A former hikikomori shared his story with Mainichi Shimbun, referred to as "Mr. A." Mr. A is in his mid-thirties and started life as a hikikomori after he quit going to school to avoid bullying in junior high. He graduated high school over an extended period but then dropped out of nursing school as his social phobia began to grow. Instead he attempted to complete vocational training but found himself growing tired of being concerned about other people all the time and began shutting himself in at home.

Mr. A began to turn his life around after his mother found a news article about 10 years ago and they attended a hikikomori support meeting. He started going out of the house for several hours once every two weeks and that habit eventually grew to longer time spent outside the home.

Chairman Isao Sakamoto said, "The hikikomori are isolated within their families and their families are isolated within society. They don't have to blame themselves for their hikikomori family members. I want to tell them to live together and to please not suffer alone."

The Japanese government estimated there are over half a million people between the ages of 15-39 living in social isolation in Japan.

  2. There are 127 million people on those islands, and of course a shit-ton of people on this planet in general. I support lifestyles that don't lead to reproduction for the sole purpose of "we're full"

Of course low birth rates tend to correlate with quality of life. Why bother having a kid when almost anything else is better?

  3. Living on that island with so many people must make you feel like a packed sardine all the time. I can see how some people would want the safety of a familiar dwelling, even if that too is cramped as all hell. Coupled with so many avenues of entertainment and communication that don't require you to leave or even bother having to deal with others in person, I can see why so many of them withdraw.

  4. Look up the "mouse utopia" experiments, and I think there may be just a little teeny bit of correlation between the behavior of the rodents in them to the aggressive NEETism Japan is famous for.

When population density is extremely high, but all basic needs (food, water, bedding, mates) are still available, strange behaviors seem to manifest. It's as if the brains of certain animals are deeply hard-wired as an evolutionary measure with a "too many" alarm that trips when populations get dense and that silent, gnawing, flashing red light just can't be turned off, no matter how high the "real" population cap goes due to modern technology or how many meals you are getting. And those behavioral breakdowns usually result in a loss of interest in reproduction (males don't mate, and females who give birth neglect their young to death) and bouts of brief but extreme violence.

Brains seem to be unable to handle too much crowding and break down under that unsolvable internal stress. Add to that external stress unlike anything you see in any other comparable modern nation with immense pressure to excel at school, excel in your job, and raise a family, with personal choice to not devote your entire life to those goals as a shameful lack of responsibility and competence, and it's no real wonder you get people who just up and quit on society and break off contact with the greater world. Their brains have melted down.

It's also not really surprising they're getting older though, the first generations of them seemed to arise in the mid to late 80's and continued into the early 90's, so, assuming they aren't dying off, that's a population that's just going to have to trend 'greyer'.

  6. Just to add on, I think so many of Japan's problems rely on their holistic embrace of new developments. It seems that the whole industrialised world is trending towards the problems endemic in Japan, and rumours about CEOs jumping to death and occasional articles about the ridiculously distorted role of police(arrests for littering and old people shoplifting because there's more community in prison) really aren't properly communicating the range and depth of societal issues. Imagine how burgers would react if they had half a million known neet manchildren.

  7. The west already has the problems of Japan. The population growth of the native populations are plummeting all across the west and rural communities are becoming ghost towns. Younger generations are getting demotivated as neoliberalism denies all but the privileged or lucky/fanatically-dedicated few careers. Meaningful work in factories that could previously supply a utopian standard of living have been replaced by low paying service work and freedom is getting cracked down on to appease social conservatives and sjws. All this combined with people having kids in their 40s has lead to a mentally broken and despairing generation that just wants to live the good life like their boomer ancestors.

The west just drowns out the problem with immigration and having a few prosperous parts of their countries subsidize the cripplingly impoverished rest to prevent anarchy.

  10. This is something Ive watches a few documentaries about on YT. Its a strange habit that happens to a lot of people (particulary boys) though girls have been known to do this.

Its usually the same story, bullying or too much social pressure to succeed cuz these people to become reculsive and stay in their rooms.

What amazes me is how much the parents put up with it. They truly are dedicated to their kids. Imagine having a son and not seeing him for 2 +yrs amd just communicating to him via a door. It could be pretty sad and damging to the family, but they do get use to it.

This is something that Japan has to address, but they are quite conservative about dealing with these issues like bullying or sexual harrassment.

  13. Here's a great video on the "mouse utopia" experiments. It's really fascinating.

From everything I've read about hikikomori, the phenomenon seems to boil down to "high population density + very high pressure to conform and succeed + bad social experiences = hikikomori." Non-Japanese people really don't understand just how intense the pressure to conform is in Japanese society. Kids aren't really taught to be themselves and explore their individuality. Instead, everyone is encouraged to act and look a certain way.

That's not even getting into how stressful Japanese academics/education is. Tons of students are sent to juku, or cram school. This is because the entrance examinations of high schools and universities are so insanely hard that students have to study constantly if they hope to pass. Many kids attend a full day at school and then a few additional hours of cram school in the evening before doing a couple more hours of study at home. It's hardly surprising that some students can't handle the pressure and end up becoming hikikomori. The same applies to people who did manage to get through academic hell but still couldn't find a decent job.

  14. I also heard about how, due to the way politeness and the language structure is set up, you don't or can't really strike up a conversation with a total stranger. (Because what if you don't use the correct politeness level?) And so their social circles are super super small as a result, and the school years are considered their happiest moments and that life ends when you graduate in a way, while in America it's considered to be when your life is actually starting.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, though.

  20. People assume these are western issues but Asian social conservatives and sjws are much much worse.

Communist China is obvious as it censors the sexual, violent (green blood) and political but South Korea has a ministry of women and family that literally is sjws if they had a governmental organization. Their previous president was also the puppet of a feminist cult lead by 8 wealthy anti-men women called the "divine goddesses".

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sung_Jae-gi
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Gender_Equality_and_Family
    https://kiwifarms.net/threads/daughters-of-megalia.25416/

Japan's social conservatives literally got all of Japan's pornography censored and this is supported by the left who want to respect women. When a Call of Duty or other AAA western title is released to Japan it is heavily censored for violence and this is the thanks to the efforts of progressive groups that want us to think of the children. The Japanese rating system also isn't a recommendation, it is law. Worse, it has an ethics committee that rates based on things that "shame the nation" or are "unethical" so neither conservatives or liberals can touch it.
