One of my favourite cartoons when I was young was Babar
It came out in 1989 and was based off of a children's book that came out in 1931
It is often accused of being an imperialist story about the second french empire but I refuse to let that detract from my enjoyment of the series

I think I might of watched the cartoon when I was younger and/or read the books. Good stuff. Gives me nostalgia.

Of course, whenever I think of Babar now, I think of "WOW IS THIS REALLY BABAR'S HOUSE? ELEPHANTS SHOWER WITH THEIR NOSES!" from Frisky Dingo.

I remember the cartoon but not a great deal of it. Also, wasn't Barbar married to his cousin?

Edit: Married his second cousin. His cousin's daughter.

I watched this show as a kid and found it unbearably boring possibly because I was fond of the batshit insanity of Spongebob by that point

I was watching it when it aired on "The Family Channel" in the early 90's (prior to that, it aired first in the US on HBO). Prior to the Nelvana series and the 1989 movie, there was two TV specials produced by Bill Melendez Productions I was slightly familiar with as well (being the first adaptations of Babar in animated form), of course I shouldn't forget the holiday special "Babar and Father Christmas", which I'm sure led to a continued interest in bringing Babar to both the small and big screen shortly afterwards. I enjoyed the Nelvana series for having a more fleshed out origins tale of Babar as seen during the first half of the show, and I suppose I liked the idea of animals that decided to stand up for themselves and basically adapt to a more humane way of living on par with man the way Celesteville is structured. Later episodes in the show reveal that elephants aren't the only species to live there as all sorts of other animals can be seen often in the background or as part of the episode.
