BJD, otherwise known as a Ball-Jointed Doll.
I was surprised to not see these people on here yet. Almost their entire community is made up of weeaboos, autistics, and 30-somethings with enough money to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on resin (plastic) dolls; then rage at everyone around them because someone stole their doll's look (HINT: 99% OF THEM LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME) or someone reposted their shitty story photos of their dolls they take in excess. Also if you don't have the right (expensive) doll you don't fit in. Or if you do, you're a piece of shit anyway and elitist. They tend to get creepily obsessed with their dolls as well, treating them as if they were real people or are deeply insulted if you don't like their dolls as it is an extension of their being. Or if you even so much make a peep that you need to brush the doll's hair. Oddly enough for the general age group of these hobbiests, they seem really into the teen/hipster/goth scenes for their special little pals. They often have meet ups where they bring their dolls into public and.. I'm not quite sure?
(Your typical BJD photo story. Complete with what I believe might be yaoi and accidental pedophilia since half the dolls look 5.)
Some general BJD terms:
Face ups: The painting done on a doll's face.
Sculpts: The doll model.
Recasts: Usually Chinese knock offs that buy the dolls and make copies for a quarter of the price. This is a huge deal with purists for various (reasonable, some not) reasons.
Bonding: A deep seeded emotional attachment to the doll. A lot of $500+ dolls get tossed out or traded a month later because of lack of parental bonding with their 30 year old overlord.
Some of my favorite things I found from just scrolling for 30 minutes through the various BJD communities. Namely Den of Angels (DOA) which is known for its absolutely insane rules and even more stuck up, toxic community. (It requires an invitation code to register now. So, if you're new to the community, sucks to be you. Get popular nerd.) Their problem transaction threads are the best.
Here is an archive of an entitled buyer upset because she didn't get her way and didn't get a doll way under the usual re-sale price by likely thousands. The owner simply decided not to sell it.
The most recent drama ended with a girl being escorted out of a meet-up BY THREE OFFICERS over potentially bringing a fake doll to it (with no intention of selling, just existing.)
Archived thread
There have been complaints of doll owners at conventions stalking suspected recasts at the conventions and smashing them. I can't really find anything substantial on that, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised.
A good portion of them tend to over react to everything because they're entitled little snowflakes. They're also some of the most passive aggressive people I've ever met.
Here's a few things that made me laugh browsing for this post.
And here's some monstrosities for you.
And this was just kind of sad from one of the confession blogs.
From what I've heard, the regular doll collecting community is just about as insane, but doesn't have as big of an internet presence since porcelain and baby doll collectors tend to be significantly older.
