You can also just cover the head with foil, then cling wrap if working with heat, or cling wrap alone for glue. Its not that involved.

Ah, then I guess so, but still seems weird to me. It's like the difference copying a new CD to sell for a few bucks and copying it to use in your own car where it's likely to be scratched up within a week. Yes, I'm old. You're using the copy you bought for your own personal use in a situation that would likely harm the original.

I have little faith in clingwrap adequately protecting a $100-200 item. Murphy's law. There's always going to be something that doesn't quite work the way you want it to.

There is an unspoken rule that private use recasting is fine. But she was not doing private use, she using it for gain by selling the wigs via comms.

I've never cared about being that gentle lol. Ive always been rough with my dolls to a point. I guess it really depends? Ive done glue and mohair wigs, rare fur for small heads, and heat curled and set synth wigs on heads, never had damage. These are resin toys at the end of the day, a little sanding fixes most scratches and its no different then working on a person really. Some people wear cotton gloves, ive used my knees to grip n restring dolls just a matter of preference.

I also enjoy cheaper dolls or get good deals on nippon bids. Sure, I have a head worth $300, but im not gonna treat it different then my $80 head. Just have to be cautious to a point, don't let em fall ect

Edit: I lean to the crafting and custom side of the hobby so I have no qualms self casting parts for colors, modding joints for better posing recasting parts off one doll to put them on another. spose im just apathetic to it all. It's a fun hobby mind, just really expensive. too expensive to deal with nonsense

I mean you could argue she's talking money from the original brand by selling wigs specifically for that doll, but recasting the heads for her studio use is nothing.

It's like complaining that someone made their own fake iPhone, from a cast of their original, to use while making cases.

I saw that mess. Ngl, but the sheer tantrum people throw over Native anything is almost sycophantic in itself. In a FB group im in, people threw a tantrum because op made a side comment about wanting to blend fantasy themes into their Native repaint. Like a normal person, I assumed that meant antlers or hooves ect, some went into a full rant about how Natives weren't a 'myth' or some shit. No one even said that??
FFs there's even a native version of werewolves, is it offensive to take a euro werewolf fig and put the regal on it? Are the concepts of a forestry native of x tribe with a magic vine wood leg offensive?

The wendigo is as a part of boogyman in pop culture as a wolf is a predator in folktales. Shame its getting nerfed into voldemort instead of the proper warning entity it is.

*is it still a relevant warning today? People in the US territory don't really need to fear eating each other and being cursed in winter anymore. Pretty sure folks are more worried about slenderman or another human coming for their ass. Try playing chase at noon in a forest, there is nothing more horrifying then someone chasing you through the woods when they weren't a part of the og group.

While I understand, I also see it as dum to be mad about, especially when some 1/25% native blood white girl screeches about oppression.

Seeing as 3d printed dolls are becoming a popular sculpting method among capable molders, how do ya'll feel about it? On one hand I like the idea of tech being used and the sheer speed of some people is impressive, but I feel a part of me sort of shuns the cost of printed dolls as the makers didn't really get their hands all that dirty or suffer enough for my $300-500. Weird peeve and maybe im wrong to feel that way, but that is how i feel. I know too well the hell of sanding seam lines and apoxing fixes ect, but, still.

There is also the issue of some budding doll makers straight up taking free thingiverse files, modding a little, and selling the end product.

I just wonder how smooth the surface is? Every 3D printer I've seen creates a fuckton of tiny ridges as it layers the matrix, whatever the matrix might be. This can be fine with some stuff, I saw a really cool vid once where some art students made a molten glass 3D printer to make some really cool looking bowls, but the idea of getting a doll, and then having to spend literally days sanding it smooth sounds like a nightmare. I understand it as a method to create a prototype and or a reverse mold for casting though.

Are there methods to print a smooth surface?

Heads are usually printed in resin or dolls are sent to prototypers. I have no clue how it works, but i have a prototypefrom a defunct bjd maker that is made of a smoothish material, like firm, solid plaster?

im sure there are, just google it, most print hobby places talk about it. Smoothing depends on material but just prime it, sand, or fill gaps.

3D printing is whatever, but I prefer handmade with progression pictures. It's one thing to post a screenshot of a program, but to see the tangible clay in someone's hands is just more satisfying.

Too bad not many people post videos anymore.

I started reading the thread on fantyfoo's account. She was the one banned for making the plaster heads. It makes no sense when people make doll forms and recasting feet for slopers in the shoemaking thread.

Tbh, their time would be better spent on banning or posting a buyer's beware thread about Dollshe and April Story. I was watching Asenva's stream and someone is still waiting on a Dollshe from 2016.

I haven't seen much about April Story, but yeah Dollshe deserves a glaring warning of "Do Not Order From This Scam", with the entire hobby warning newbies. The "sales" they run, just to get some more money probably to pay for supplies to make dolls from years ago is so, so scammy. I've heard that if you set up a paypal dispute (i.e. demand a refund) you'll get your doll in under a year. People who are waiting over a year are dumbasses and suckers.

@neverendingmidi Imo, Dollshe is still only allowed due to popularity and some of the mods being fans. Some dolls have been grandfathered in or denied over stupid reasons. I don't recall the doll or company, but they were denied for having optional high heel legs. (no ankle joint) Volks now offers the same years later and is allowed.

Ashbet's cat head was just a modded obitsu head and also grandfathered in when the rules were getting stricter.

April Story is just a mess. I have a couple of their dolls, but that was before the issues. They started not sending out orders and blamed it on their factory burning down, then they said they were sick or had a heartattack (?), and I think maybe a car accident at one point...? Not sure if I'm getting the last one mixed up with a different company. Either way, they had different stories for the Korean collectors.

Now, they're apparently owned by FloraMonkey, but it just seems like the same issues and sales repeating. Right now they're having a 70% off sale on in-stock bodies and guaranteeing shipping in three days. They're already behind.

Personally, I enjoy making and customizing dolls, whether they are plushies, rag dolls, Russian wooden dolls and Asian fashion dolls. Though, I don't think I customized Asian BJDs though (They are SUPER PRICEY), yet I enjoy customizing Blythe dolls, Licca-chan dolls, and Mimi World dolls. I also enjoy making clothing for them as well. I do prefer crochet clothes to make though.

Oh, I know the drama queens and the looney tunes dollthusiasts that bully and harass other doll customizers/makers for using unpopular doll brands to customize and what not. I know how toxic the drama can get. It is ridiculous and childish if I say so myself.

It is one thing to critique and criticize, every artists need those things (including myself). But some people man. They are toys, not your relatives. Chill out and relax guys.

Also, I facepalm over people getting grouchy over that Wendigo doll. Wendigos ARE NOT REAL! They are imaginary creatures. Good lord, it seems like those wokesters are superstitious and believe in that mumbo jumbo. Oh the madness indeed.

I'm in a FB bjd group with someone who bought like 5 dolls from Dollshe. She got them within a year because, yeah, if you spend that much they're not going to want to refund you. There were people bitching that they've waited more than 3 years for a Dollshe and that's incredibly stupid.
