Battletoads went full Duke Nukem. They started as an popular series, became a living meme and then released a new game so shitty and full of meta humor it alienates all but the most easily satisfied of players. It's no surprise it's free on game pass.
From what I've heard the 'campaign' is barely two hours long and it's way too easy. I'm not even sure why Battletoads is popular. The NES original is notoriously hard, the Arcade version was an unfinished game that was designed to devour quarters, the SNES one wasn't stellar and the Double Dragon team up games best part was Double Dragon.

Battletoads went full Duke Nukem. They started as an popular series, became a living meme and then released a new game so shitty and full of meta humor it alienates all but the most easily satisfied of players. It's no surprise it's free on game pass.

I have a couple of ideas why that might be the case.

1. Battletoads and Duke Nukem 3D were products of their time. Dukes over the top action hero bravado and Battletoads early 90s radical-ness. Those are outdated, and having that in 2020 in a game that isn't trying to be a period game or a parody would be strange. So they're updated with a modern makeover (calarts) and played as "ironic" parodies. Personally, I think they should've played it straight with a touch up here or there, the same way Cyberpunk 2077 keeps the 80s future aesthetic with a sprinkle of modernisation.
2. Hipsters, SJWs, and young people never played the original games and only know them by reputation. They are then asked to make a sequel. The target audience of hipster game journos, ResetEra, and young people also never played the games and only know them by reputation. It's like how shit tier Silent Hill fans thinks the games are just pyramid head, zombie nurses, and air raid sirens, clapping when they see the thing they recognise. I'll not link the RLM Star Wars bit, you've seen it lots of times.

The franchise was pretty much a throwaway designed to capitalize on the TMNT craze, and a not very well executed throwaway either. The Nintendo game was notable for its difficulty, cartoonish action, and some decent music. But it should have stayed in the Nineties and been something that was related to the fads of the time period, like the Big Bad Beetleborgs. Unfortunately, Battletoads 2020 is going to live on as a relation to the fads of our time period: namely, the time when TV and Game studios hired a bunch of no-talent wokescolds to ruin every franchise on Earth.
