I've always wondered. These basement dwellers say that Behind the Meme is killing memes, but is there any tangible proof of this? EmpLemon mentioned that memes were dying quicker nowadays, but that's probably because of how normified the Internet has become in the first place.
Apparently if enough people knows where a meme comes from, it's not fun for them anymore. It's like hipsters and indie music.

Seeing these goons talk so highly /religiously about "meme culture" without any sense of self awareness is seriously concerning.

Ironic, considering they didn't actually create most of them, but instead took other people's content and ran with it.

"lol matt furie doesn't control pepe, he's a meme now and nobody owns a meme"

"WAIT NO WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING REDDIT/IFUNNY/ETC PEPE IS OURS REEE"

You just have to watch the first 5 minutes to know what happened. He was just assblasted this guy misrepresented Youtube Poop by talking about YTP videos when they were popular, because he still makes Youtube Poops.
Somehow this delves into him saying how Youtube has sucked recently, talking all about old Youtube and then changes that came around to Youtube. Probably all because of Behindthememe misrepresenting YTPs in his view. Into 49 minutes of this..

"you used a wiki and google definition for meme are you retarded."
"You evolved from normie to super normie. which is not a good thing."
"instead of killing memes, kill yourself faggot"
"Ok, look behind the meme, I'm glad you don't care about the hate you get, but please listen to them, they have a reason for hating you, how about taking their advice and stop using know your meme and urban dictionary as your only sources, they can be inaccurate, so just scroll through the google search bar and try to find some other sources"

And this big one there's the first thing in the comments section
"Okay, I'll start off by saying I like that you were still as positive in this video as in any of your other videos. Now, for the criticism. If you claim you can take criticism (which is not the same as dismissing people as "haters"), then take this please. Most people get hate, but a lot of the time, there isn't really a reason. Sometimes things just get hated purely because they're popular. This is not one of those times. People hate you FOR A REASON. And despite what many may have said to you, I believe the main reason isn't that you're just explaining memes. Other YouTube channels go into detail about specific memes and most of them aren't hated. The problem is you don't do adequate research. I've watched a ton of your videos now and the majority of them have incorrect and irrelevant information. See the problem is your audience consists of mostly normies who don't know memes. If you want to explain memes to them, fine. But, DO IT RIGHT! Giving them little information about how a meme is used as well as low quality examples of it's use, don't give them a very good representation of the meme and how it can be used. THIS is when it spreads to places like Facebook by these normies and the meme gets overused and badly treated because they don't know any better. This is what ultimately kills the meme. And yes, it's not ALL down to you, but you are contributing to the downfall and that's why we hate you. Even if it wasn't actually your house, I do think you didn't deserve to be doxxed, but that itself should be an indication of how much people care about this. People love memes and you claim to as well, so you need to treat them with respect or the people who do will come after you. Also, as a side-note. You cannot use the "worse things are happening" "there's bigger fish to fry" argument. Obviously terrible things happen in the world every day. But, just because the things you do are less terrible, doesn't mean people shouldn't care. That being said, I do look forward to any new type of video you upload. Branching out is always a good thing, even (or especially) when it fails. But, if you do continue the meme videos, please just put more effort into it. I feel like a lot of the time, you yourself don't really understand the meme and thus, teach it to others very poorly. You're like a substitute teacher at the moment and until you become a proper teacher, people won't give you respect."

I'm not a fan of Behind The Meme for his boring vids but this whole drama is fucking hilariously pathetic. There are far far better reasons to dislike him such as how he regurgitates from Know Your Meme (but even then why would people put the blame on Behind The Meme and not also to Know Your Meme for also doing the same thing of explaining the jokes? Maybe because KYM is not filled with normies? I don't know either) but to go ahead and say that he's killing muh meems is fucking dumb especially that people are still making these Crash Bandicoot woah vids even today. Some argued that he killed the Crash meme because he spreaded misinformation about it so I went ahead and checked out the reupload of the vid but all I see most of the time in the comments is just people REEEEEEEEEEEEEEing about "normies vs outsiders" or how's he's killing memes etc. (And the only incorrect information I got in the comments is just him mentioning the fruits in the game series as "Peaches" instead of "Wumpa Fruits", but even then that's fucking lenient compared with 9gag misusing rage face memes, and the other is just him mispronouncing OneyPlays)

Comments section in that reuploaded vid is fucking amazing too:

READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE YOU REPLY!!! If anyone is wondering how this killed the meme let me explain. There are two internet user stereotypes Normies, and Outsiders. Normies tend to stay with the crowd and barely do their own thing. Outsiders tend to almost always think outside the box. Outsiders are the people that make memes. Normies and memes usually don't mix very well. When Normies make memes their memes are filled with cringe. This makes Outisders want to stop making the memes. Then the meme dies. BTM is not a meme expert at all he is a normie. So people who like his videos are usually Normies. So they watch BTM and make memes and the meme dies. This can be backed up Google Trends. Which shows that old memes died a lot slower than new memes because of this. Also the reason Normies make bad memes is because most of them are little kids. Sorry if this comment had any grammatical or spelling errors I tried my best to proofread. Thank you to anyone who read this whole thing.

I don't understand how he can do SO LITTLE research. He called Oney ONE-E, how the fuck do you even do that?! Oney's fucking intro is a jingle where he says "Oney plays with friends". Do his ears not pick up sounds that aren't xd relatable memes lol? Behind the Meme is a complete retard.

Also fyi Behind The Meme/Kyle Bryce actually doxed himself for mentioning his real name on several videos, most notably in the "Draw My Life" video while others just carry on with it, so this whole doxing shit is expected anyway.

I like how we've reached a point of people REEEEEEEEEEing over fucking pixels/text on a screen.

My older sister is one of those types who follow the "meme culture" religiously. About a week back, she brought up BtM getting doxxed, and said that he "deserved it". I asked her why, and she replied "because he exposes memes to the normies and ruins them."

Regardless of what your opinion on BtM is, he didn't deserve to get doxxed over something as harmless as fucking memes.

I think what happened to Behind the Memes is really depressing.

He wasn't trying to ruin "meme culture" (whatever the fuck that means), he just wanted to educate individuals on the origins of memes in hopes to bring more people into the joke. Anyone who unironically attacks him or dislikes him for that is pretty petty.

Who cares if "normies" become ingrained in memes culture, it's more people to share the fun and the joke with. That's what memes are. They're there to help us laugh, even when the world is a shitshow.
