The one that allows the original NES Metroid to save your progress instead of depending on a bogus password system.

In a similar fashion above, the one that not only allows you to save in Castlevania II, but makes the game much less cryptical and far more manageable, with actually accurate clues as to what to do to advance.

Almost every undub there is. Most old-school dubs for foreign games suck, especially JRPG's, so I always seek the undubbed versions of those games.

As for individual games that expand on the original iterations, I suggest Super Metroid Redesign, The Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds, Super Mario 3Mix and Final Fantasy ++.

Super Mario Bros 3 Mix

It's the most downloaded NES romhack, and for a good reason. I played it myself and it's basically a remake of (almost) the entire super mario series, from SM1 to SMGalaxy. There's even extra shit when you beat the game for the first time that allows you to get the "complete" ending.

I also recommend this:

The first level is basically the same as the original and then it wildly deviates. I find the new music tolerable. That would be the one clear weakness is the new OST has nothing on the original but that's a really high bar to pass. Every other Castlevania romhack goes into fuck you difficulties where the autistic creator is the only one who can beat it legitimately without save scumming.

I liked this one too: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3211/

Not going to link an LP with a soyboy in the thumbnail. I'm one of those guys that likes 2D Metroid but I hate Metroid 1 on the NES, 2 on the Game Boy and Super is okay but I find it very overrated. I love the two GBA titles and AM2R the most. This hack made Super Metroid a little more fun for me.

Donner Party (Monster Party NES hack) has always given me a laugh and the soundtrack is amazing with 8 bit renditions of famous songs:

Also this SMW hack where every song has been replaced with the infamous Hong Kong '97 theme:

Some sonic rom hacks I found quite enjoyable.

Sonic 1 Megamix, Metal Sonic Hyperdrive, Mobius Evolution, the S factor

S factor is really hard though from what I remember.

Super Demo World is a classic if you want a nice linear difficulty progression that starts where SMW ends.
The Super Mario 64 sourceport has a bunch of interesting stuff going on too with RTX support and multiplayer, etc.
Recently I've been playing an ancient Secret of Evermore hack that adds 2P support on and off with a relative. It's a good time yet horrifically buggy, highly recommended.

Does anyone know if there's a torrent or archive of prepatched roms somewhere on archive.org similar to the archive of fantranslated roms? The roms themselves are there and the patches are freely available but it'd be great to be able to throw the whole mess into Retroarch without having to worry about matching checksums or extracting, patching and rezipping the roms themselves.
