I'm sure the rest of you have songs in your head you wish you could get out and record forever. I've tried a few times over my life to learn how to use electronic music programs like fruityloops, darkwave studio and others. I've sat through hour long youtube tutorials trying to retain information and it just never seems to work for me. What's the cheapest option as far as assigning sounds to keyboard and having a more traditional experience? I feel like that would be both faster and better for experimentation to come up with something cool and complete.

So soundfonts aren't restricted just to MIDI music right? It works for any instrument samples? This might be what im looking for.

There are some "realistic" soundfonts that have instrument samples, but the vast majority of them aren't that realistic in comparison to many VST plugins.

I don't know if this program still exists I think it was called 'guitar pro'. Anyways it wasn't a music production program it was like advanced tabbing software that let you input tabs/sheet music and export midi files(and vice versa) while also playing a basic version of the songs you put in.

Just the way it was set up taught me how to read sheet music while also giving me a better idea of how to use programs like fruity loops. It's also really great if say you can read sheet music but your guitarist only reads tabs or whatever. Just a thought.

Hmm... maybe not then, I just find VSTs really overwhelming, a lot of them sound the same, have these large controllers which can probably be used to make them sound like whatever you want, I just find these programs daunting, like they're a whole programming language like c++ or something. I usually have an idea of the sound I want, and I spend hours trying to find a VST that best matches it, then I have to manually put in individual notes in a pattern which will take forever compared to just tapping keys. Seems like a really slow pace for what I want to do

The only software I ever used was Audacity, but then again I was making harsh noise so it's not like my needs were very high. Most of the people I know who are producers or DJs seem to prefer Ableton over anything else.
