We all know the Big 4 of thrash and grunge but what about some love for the other genres
Ill start...
Southern Sludge-DOWN, Crowbar, Acid Bath, Eyehategod
Gothic post punk - Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure and The Sisters of Mercy.
(I'd have included Joy Division, but I consider them more of an influence/precursor to gothic post punk). There's a lot of other great, lesser known bands of the genre, but I consider those four to be the biggest/most well known.
Romanticism: Chopin, Wagner, Brahms, Tchaikovsky. This is actually a pretty difficult question haha. Beethoven is Romantic too but he's also Classical so I'd argue he's not 'pure' romantic. If that's even a thing.
It is not a good idea to reduce a big area into 4 names; it is just my opinion at this moment
Pre-baroque period: Palestrina, Josquin des Prez, John Dowland, Orlando de Lasso Baroque period: J.S. Bach, Handel, Telemann, Monteverdi Classical period: Mozart and Haydn reign supreme. If you need two more names, then C.P.E. Bach and Luigi Boccherini. Romantic period: Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Richard Strauss. The first half of 20th Century: Debussy, Schoenberg, Bartok, Stravinsky. Post-1950: Elliott Carter, Alfred Schnittke, Krzysztof Penderecki, Olivier Messiaen (Note I don't include any "minimalists" or anyone who is mainly inspired by pop music).
