Blood Bowl -

Blood Bowl is a discontinued Specialist Game by Games Workshop that bills itself as a Fantasy Football tabletop. Of course, not in the traditional way people mean Fantasy Football. Instead, as the story goes, in the middle of a battle in the Warhammer Fantasy Universe the two armies unearth a temple to a lesser diety... of football. And after one thing lead to another Blood Bowl became both the most popular sport in the world, as well as the preferred method to settle conflicts.

The game itself is less like American Football and more akin to Rugby mixed with a Boxing match. Each side gets 11 players from their race, and while ostensibly the goal of the game is to score the most points by bringing the ball into the opponents endzone, oftentimes it degenerates into simply trying to kill the other team's players in order to force an opening. Getting knocked out cold is fairly common in play, injuries and death are less so, but still happen frequently enough. Since players are persistant for a team, losing your star player can hurt you in the long run, unless you want to reroll your team.

Although the actuall miniatures are out of production now, the game itself lives on in two particular varieties. The first one is in the computer game made by Cyanide, appropriately titled Blood Bowl.

This version has several editions out, only the latest of two of which are still compatible with the multiplayer servers, and the sequel with better graphics, and supposedly fewer bugs, is due out sometime next year. The "Legendary Edition" which includes all the races except Chaos Dwarves, Daemons of Khorne, and the Lizardmen can be had on Steam for $20 compared to the latest edition which is $30, although the latest is on sale untill the 24th for $12, so its a better buy at the moment.

Edit: These versions are now outdated, and the matchmaking MP community for them is completely dead. Instead see the sequel, with a much improved UI and matchmaking system. The Mixed reviews are mostly from people understandably upset at the slow pace of team releases and the fact they had to essentially rebuy the game, and from people who can't understand dice, but for a new player those are issues don't matter.

The other version out there is free and java based with simple 2d graphics, called FUMBBL. FUMBBL has been around for years now, and includes of course all of the races and the latest community driven rulesets. However it's UI is a bit more unweildly than the Cyanide one, and the Java client can be a little bit of a bitch to work with. It does seem to have less glitches though, (Sequel of the above has far less glitches than both) and in a tabletop game, this can be fairly important.

So, anyone else here a Blood Bowl player?

I was so disappointed with the video game version, it stands as one of only four games I've traded back for a refund in the previous console generation. And this is from me: I LOVE the Warhammer universe, both medieval and sci-fi.

Did I just miss something, or was it just kinda repetitive and obvious? After a few games I felt like I more or less knew all the bells and whistles that particular race was going to do. I suppose I would have been happier with FIFA-esque real-time action or something....

If you mean you had the console versions, I don't blame you, the console versions were shit ports. Didn't even have MP leagues right?

Probably not, and yes, I got it on the 360. To be honest, I only logged a few days into it before I knew it wasn't my thing. Now I love Orcs, but even after 2 or 3 hours of play I'd pretty much heard all that was going to be said from the commentators, and the cheerleaders were looping their animations. It bugged me because of how quickly the "new" factor had worn off.

Big fan here. Never played the tabletop game (I am a longtime WHFB player though) but I love the Steam version. Too bad all my friends hate it (because they suck)

Played it back in the day. Had more fun with Blood Bowl than with Space Hulk. (and Space Hulk was pretty fun.)

I just had possibly the most brutal match I've personally seen in awhile in Cyanide Blood Bowl. fresh rolled Human team vs a similarly fresh rolled High Elf team. By the time turn 16 rolled around, I had 3 players with injuries, and an additional 3 unconcious players, plus a player ejected for a stomping foul, while the Elves had 2 injuries, 4 KO'd guys, and again an ejected player. Lost 1-2 on it, only because when you have 4 guys left alive, you aren't stopping the Elves from just running with the ball.

Might have to trash my Human team, as one guy has a Smashed Hip (-1 Movement) and the other guy has a niggling injury (1/6 chance of missing a game). Not sure if it's worth it continuing with them, even if one of the Blitzers gained a level.

>playing with the two teams that actually revolve around playing football.

Eww man, that's not the spirit of Blood Bowl.

I'd probably have taken less damage if it was the Orcs, but Humans and Elfs can bash each other pretty good without worry of rolling enemy doubles too often, so we went for it. But again, having 4 vs 3 against elves just means the 3 elves are gonna run circles around you.

Just a bump to bitch about the dice. Ogre team vs my Human team, 2 of my best players got splattered to death, including one who was dodging away from an Ogre in order to not get splattered the next turn.... Now my team has a space in it's lineup as nobody can actually reliably pick the ball up anymore, and I need to raise about 2 matches worth of income to hire a new Thrower for that... *sigh* that's Blood Bowl for you.

Chaos and Orks are the only teams worth playing IMO. Humans require too much actual football.

I was watching my brother play a game in the legendary edition. He was Norse against High Elves. His star runner that he named after himself had the ball and ran to the end of his safe allowance and he decides to risk Jumping the 2 extra spaces. We gasped in shock as he dies landing in the end zone. The only casualty he suffered during the game. The second half he spent smashing the Elves; 1 dead, 4 injured, and another 6 knocked out during one drive. They had 2 guys left on the field one that dodged everything and ran away the rest of the match and another that survived 4 stompings. Blood Bowl is pretty awesome.

Heh, Wood Elves are so squishy.

Was the first game for the poor Elven Lineman too, course they still beat me 3-1 with their bullshit tactics of "know how to handle the ball".

EDIT: To clarify, this is from FUMBBL, the freeware alternative to the 3D retail title. Both use the same ruleset.
