Last week we talked about the return of Norman Osborn to the MCU. This week, we’re talking about Sony’s film plans for their Souls (Dark Souls, Demon Souls) franchise, and in particular, Bloodborne.

For those unfamiliar, the Souls franchise is a series of games where players battle demonic and gruesome monsters. As players engage in grueling (and particularly difficult) fights they gain souls to level up, and new gear to equip on their hero. These games have gained notoriety as of late for their incredible difficulty and grotesque monster designs.

Since partnering with HBO on the upcoming Last Of Us series, Sony and HBO are both keen to bring more franchises to HBO Max. We can exclusively share that Bloodborne is in early development as a limited run series.

The Details Of Bloodborne The Series

An early version of the script exists along with some concept art, both of which I’ve seen. The story will be similar in structure to movies like Dread or The Raid, with the protagonist set with a seemingly simple task but has to work through a series of battles with enemies. Each episode of the proposed 8-episode season sees the protagonist fighting a boss from the game in the climax. Between what I’ve seen in the script and of concept art, these will be visual feasts for the eyes, and in keeping with the Souls brand of bloody violence.

Sony is currently dissatisfied with some elements of the script and it is undergoing a re-write. Though, many elements, including the climatic boss fight for each episode, remain. We don’t have any casting news. However, it’s said they are looking for a lead actor who has a strong background in stunt work.

I don't know where they'll get the money for it, it would be significantly more expensive to make than GOT or The Witcher.

And it’s still not on fucking PC.
If you are on pc - you can get a free month of sonys ps4 streaming service sometimes and the library of available games includes bloodborn - which is how I played through it. Need a ps4 controller to play though. Some software workaround exists to fake a ps controller input but you'll still need some kind of controller because mouse movement won't work

Souls is all about indirect contextual storytelling, many times through architecture and dialogue - the core premise is about exploration and very much rooted in the video games medium. It might be the worst choice for a tv treatment out of all the souls games too. Can't wait to see it lol

Does Sony have any ownership over the Dark Souls series? My understanding that it's co-owned by From Software and Bandai Namco.
No, just primarily Demon's Souls (and Bloodborne) because of Sony having been a part of the development process and forking over lots of $$$ to make it happen. Sony published DS in Japan, but thought it would bomb outside of Asia so Atlus published it in burgerland, and Namco-Bandai did the same everywhere else. But, since Sony held onto their rights, DS was never released on anything else and is why the remaster is only on PS5. Bloodborne kinda got the same treatment, minus all the other hands involved in its distribution, so it's PS4 exclusive.

The Dark Souls games were on everything that could run it since Namco-Bandai were the ones backing it and wanted it in as many hands as is possible.

How the fuck are you gonna make a series out of this? Most of the lore comes from item descriptions, the world and enemy descriptions.

On top of that.... It is heavily influenced by Lovecraftian horror. Lovecraftian horror has never fared well with hollywood.... Ever.

Gonna be an absolute trainwreck.
