Board game thread -

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Waiting on a response from upstream.

Get new friends because Arkham is the shit. (Though I actually prefer Eldrich Horror.

I have both, what is the big difference?
  • Arkham takes place in Arkham, Eldrich takes place all over the globe.
  • The main purpose of Arkham is to enter other worlds to close and seal portals. In Eldrich, players must solve the ancients riddles to stop then from being awakened. The riddles are assigned to each ancients, with different riddles depending on which ancient you choose to play. It's possible to beat Eldrich without sealing a single portal or awaking the ancient.
  • Eldrich is slightly easier to beat than Arkham, but the play time is also longer
  • Stats in Eldrich are fixed with the possibility of gain, as opposed to Arkham where you alter your stats every upkeep
  • I think Eldrich has more characters. It's easier to "die" in Eldrich with events that can kill a character instantly.
  • When your "killed" in Eldrich, your character stays there and their body can be looted, as opposed to Arkham where you go to the Hospital/Asylum or are completely devoured.

I'm gonna stop myself before I write a book.

I'm intrigued.
If popularity continues Eldrich will be much easier for expansions (AFAIK, Forsaken Lore is the only one out) to produce. New Ancient, with their pack of riddles and clues (I forgot to mention you have to earn clues instead of Arkham where you simply pick them up), done.
Edit: Looked it up and I was correct, Forsaken Lore is the only Eldrich expansion which I happen to have and it's pretty hard.

In my Eldrich sperging I forgot to mention on of my favorite games.
I'm a sucker for Battlestar Galactica and I always play the Chief.
And Pandemic is pretty good too, I'd recommend the On the Brink expansion and play the BioTerrorist mode.

Board games (and RPGs to a certain degree) are my sperg passion.

My big game I'm into is Machi Koro. It's a Japanese game. It's not super deep, it's sorta like Settlers of Catan meets Dominion but it's a nice light game that only takes like a half hour to play.

I also got a copy of Munchkin Loot Letter - it's pretty much Love Letter with a Munchkin theme, and there are people in my gaming group who are big Munchkin fans.

Recently I tried Castles of Burgundy, awesome game - only took about two and a half hours our first time and I like how it uses dice. I might pick up a copy for myself.

Also, Key to the Kingdom - we had some new people show up for this monthly board gaming meetup I help run and it was a father and son. They brought a copy of Key to the Kingdom - his son was about 10 or so but he got him into RPGs and they'd play Key to the Kingdom as it's a pretty age appropriate game. Since they were new to the group, we entertained them by playing it and it was pretty decent.

If you're cheap, you could go for the VASSAL mod - http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Arkham_Horror. I've been meaning to try VASSAL, it's mostly for wargames but there are some regular board games on it as well. Only problem is with FFG games, like Arkham Horror, some of the card text is blank so people are encouraged to actually own a copy of the game to play it online. I haven't messed around with VASSAL yet but I'd like to, GMT Games make official VASSAL mods for their games so you can play games like Twilight Struggle and Dominant Species for free. The only other thing is that it's not automated - you roll a die, but you have to move your pieces or whatever. If you do an illegal move, the computer won't correct you. You have to do all the stuff you'd do IRL with a board game to play it, but I think that's the same case with that 3D game thing on Steam.

yeah, the 3d board thing works like that too (though I don't know if the cards are blanked out on that) and I think you can even flip the table on it and stuff, which is hilariously unnecessary but probably funny.

It's always been my position that every PC or app version of board games should have the option to flip the table. You know, when you're REALLY pissed off.

They also have a mod for Betrayal at the House on the Hill.

Has anything heard of Blokus? it it involves laying down tiles trying touching corners to lock the other plays out of moves. I rocked at that game whenever I got to play it at indoor recess whenever it was below zero weather including the windchill.

That was probably the one I remember most.

One of my goals in life is someday to play "The Landlord's Game."

Short history of the game, in case you haven't heard of it - this lady, Maggie something, makes a game that demonstrates the benefit of Henry George's land value tax. The first half of the game is acquiring properties and charging rent, the second part involves instituting a LVT which ultimately benefits all the players. Sound vaguely familiar? That's because Charles Darrow, the guy who invented Monopoly, pretty much ripped off the game but ignored the second half of the game which is why Monopoly is a really bad game if you really think about it because the idea was that the second half of the game would counteract people holding monopolies in the first part. What eventually happened was they bought out Maggie's patent for the game for $500 and they published three of her games for letting them use her concept for Monopoly.

I just found out there's a guy who's trying to sell a replica version. In theory, you could try and replicate the original game - the patent for the original game is over a century old, but the problem is nobody knows what the cards and stuff are supposed to look like. This guy says he's spent like, 15 years researching the game and he is gauging interest if he republishes the game.
