Bobby Liebling - Metal Lolcow -

He doesn't really deserve a full on Lolcow thread since he doesn't use the Internet, but this guy gets up to a lot of lulzy/horrifying shit - since he's a "rock star" this seems the right place to post about him
Bobby Liebling is the singer for the doom metal band Pentagram, who are actually pretty good:
But he's essentially a pound-shop Ozzy. He has a documentary about him which covers the basics (massive drug user, to the point that he actually looks like an Evil Dead character, repeatedly fucked up what could have been a successful band's career, is currently living in his parents basement)
Since this was recorded he's done live shows, gotten somewhat on track, only to lose his mind again, and apparently assault his elderly mother
Of course since this man is somehow several people's meal ticket, they've made excuses and are preparing for another tour
Hopefully this tour yields further Liebling antics, but only time will tell

I don't think being a generic rock/metalstar and hitting a low is lolcow worthy, otherwise we'd need to have threads on the likes of Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain as well.

Courtney Love was a lolcow. She once got a drunken bikini wax in front of a journo and slurringly demanded the beautician 'WAX MY ANUS'.

I don't want to sound like I'm romanticising or lionising those two in any way, but they did manage to do it in an altogether more "graceful" way, if that's even a term that can be applied to living/dying like that. Liebling can be genuinely funny/entertaining to watch, whereas the story of how Staley died just sounds miserable and wretched - having said that if Staley had been able to stream his final months, making his art projects and playing his vidya, it might have been one of those morbid curiosity attractions like Tumblr smackheads or ChipChan.
Whereas to me someone like GG Allin or this is a lolcow, because not even the stupidest most impressionable person looks at Bobby Liebling and thinks 'that guy is cool'. Admittedly some people idolize GG but I don't think anybody wants to be anything like Bobby lmao

The crayziest part of that doc is the 20-something who marries him and has his kid.
>his kid
:optimistic:
maybe I'm being cynical but tbh would you even have viable sperm after that kind of decades-long drug regimen?

I agree. Layne's death still gets to me, seeing him without teeth and being a shell of his former self in general is just so incredible upsetting. Even the little details are sad, whether it's paying employees at game stores a bit extra so he's let in to buy vidya at night and kids don't have to be scared of the way he looked by the end during the day or the fact that his corpse was only found weeks later because of the cruel fact that his managers got worried he hasn't withdrawn any money from his bank account in a long time. May he rest in peace and at least hopefully got some kind of joy out of his NEET years playing Mario and Metal Gear, and the Mad Season stuff.

It's incredible to me that Cobain's death is sort of mystified/romanticized as far as the grunge era goes while it should be Layne instead. Not because his death was "legendary", but because it shows what addiction and fame can do to you. But I guess Cobain's suicide was just easier to swallow. Think about it. He killed himself at the height of his fame. Young, beloved, forever good-looking and with a (back then) net worth of 150 million USD. He has achieved EVERYTHING an artist would want to achieve. Sure, there were things planned like Do Re Mi and work with R.E.M., but it wouldn't have gone anywhere. He met Burroughs, his favorite author, so even his childhood dream came true months before he killed himself.

He was depressed. Bipolar. Suffered body dysmorphia. Had a trapped nerve. Scolliosis. TMJ. Larynghitis. Bronchitis. Probably brain damage from the OD in Rome. Shit and puked every night. A heroin and coke addiction. He only suffered by the end, and it wouldn't have taken long until he looked similar to Layne by the end. He wouldn't be remembered as cool and what not if he ended like Staley (although I prefer his voice over Kurt's by a mile, but the thing is just that Layne's death was so sad it was actually too sad to reach the mainstream. Kurt's was a poetic end to a story that for whatever reason turned into a international phenomenon).

Admittedly some people idolize GG

I never understood this. Do people idolize GG because of his not giving a fuck attitude? Saying what was on his mind? I don't get it. His music wasn't terrible, his message to the world was kind of "out there", but I don't understand the idolization stuff. It reminds me of when Instagram teens idolize Demri (Layne's dead girlfriend).

I think the reason Layne's death was less sensationalized upon was partially, like you said, because it's way more glamorous to blow your head off in the middle of a widely-publicized custody dispute than it is to slowly push people away until you rot away in a flat on smack and crack, but also Nirvana really were a very popular band and Kurt was a living icon to multitudes, which meant his suicide had to be covered and would inevitably end up romanticised. Conversely, AiC always had a strange relationship with the media and the grunge scene - a lot of people thought they were too "metally", and uncool because of their metallic and country/southern rock flavoured sound, which meant they didn't get as much of the limelight as Nirvana and didn't become such a youth sensation. I'm in total agreement that Layne was far and away the superior singer, and I honestly think AiC in general were better musicians and left a more impressive catalogue than Nirvana did.

I can kind of understand it. I think it's childish but it's essentially embracing nihilist destruction and anti-social sentiments, but with less of the "sadboi" vibe that other self-destructive rock stars had - they always seemed mopey, whereas GG Allin always seems like he's living for himself, in the moment, right now. When you're a young man, there's drugs, rock shows, raves, girls and all that kind of shit, you've got limitless appetites for all of it, and it's easy to start to admire someone like that, particularly in the more contrarian/angry subcultural circles such as hardcore punk. I don't think I'd ever say I admired or idolized him, but I've always respected him in a certain capacity, and I can understand why younger guys find him to be so cool - but most of them realise it's not cool or sustainable after a few years of trying to "live the life", so to speak.

GG Allin is infinitely more refreshing when you compare him to the likes of the insufferable leftists who've now come to define the subculture.

RE: Bobby Liebling. Pentagram will always be one of the greatest genre-defining Doom Metal bands, but yeah, the guy's a complete wreck.
