An annoying difference between boomers and everyone younger than them- when a technological problem or new device comes along, young people will start playing around on the device, or use their intuition to figure something out. Boomers are always like, "How do I do this?" And then when you explain it they don't fucking listen. It isn't bomb diffusion, it's a laptop.

we can talk about how bad boomers are, but most of the people in charge of corporations are Gen-X, most of the parents of those shitty redditors are Gen-X, and most of our entertainers are Gen-X. And they somehow end up being just as awful without any of the power or capability. Most of the boomer's criticisms of GenX turned out to be right, which is why no one even likes or prefers GenXers to boomers when push comes to shove. Look at politicans in this country, you're fucked if you're under 50 trying to get elected because most people born after the moon landing can't be fucking bothered. The boomers who made the hippie-to-yuppie transition, meanwhile, became the modern "Conservative" movement. They kept the hippies' self-centered hedonism, repackaged it as "rugged individualism", and added an explicit materialist bent to it bc they cared more about low taxes than preserving tradition.

The values accepted by the right wing today (anti-racism/egalitarianism, moderate feminism, maximal individual freedom, a duty to "liberate" foreign brown people, tolerance of alternative lifestyles) aren't really "conservative" at all, just repackaged 60s poz that looks tame in comparison to current breeds of poz. They're hippies driving the speed limit.

The Boomers were raised by the "Silent Generation" and "GI Generation". These people lived through Depression, rationing and even saw war. They kept their heads down, experienced scarcity and saw death themselves or at the very least in their communities.

These generations dedicated everything to making sure their kids had a better life. They abandoned the idea that kids were better off "seen and not heard" and demanded the government create a better society. They understood that it wasn't about the individual but about the circumstances, institutions and opportunities. During this generation you see the rise of the Social Gospel - the idea that religious people should aspire to create a government that serves the people like Jesus.

The Boomers are hated because a vocal and sizable percentage of them follow the Reagan era idea that its all about the bootstraps. Under the boomers you see the rise of prosperity gospel - the idea that the poor are poor because God hates them. For most Boomers ones poverty and lack of success is an individual failure - not the result of circumstance, institutions and a lack of opportunities. This shitting on the younger generations is not helped by the fact that many of them were literally hippies who wasted their youths and still ended up successful.

The biggest aspect of the hate comes from hypocrisy. Politicians blatantly ensured the Boomer's standard of living through preferential government policies. This is said under the guise of protecting the "middle class" usually.

Boomers on my country were raised by post-war parents. And by post war I mean hunger, desolation and poverty.
Most homes didn't have hot water until the 60s, cities were filled with shanty towns until the 80s, and most of our cities were filled with drug addicts and a shitty economy. Maybe my working class bias are talking but on the crisis of the oughties and the current one, boomers, millenials, and zoomers are equally screwed.
However, with the rona crisis we won't have the support from old folks, there won't be a grandpa paying his son's bills.
In my country if you get paid less than 6 figures a year you are screwed.

It doesnt really translate well for British culture, the dynamics are really differant. From an outsiders perspective Boomers appear really complacent about the world, an "everything will work out as long as you work hard, everything was slowly improving so I see no reason to worry for the future." seems endemic, nothing was fought for, nothing was a struggle.

The 'greatest' generation while often put on a pedastal to an absurd degree often had an awareness of the way the whole world can turn to shit as well as a solid understand of obligation and personal sacrifice, gen x seems a lot more instrospective and I really can't blame millenials for being so disenfranchised consider their long term prospects and the constant bombardment of media. The only really positive thing I can say about Boomers is theyre personally quite pleasent to engage with.

Their weirdness about the govt really comes through on social issues. Boomer-con men especially think government action is automatically abhorrent and rolling them all back will MAGA, even though every progressive social agenda they hate was first implemented through massive de-regulations of social conduct.

Then they get all pissy if you challenge it and they have to think any deeper than dredging up another one-liner.
