You can't be arrested for simply visiting a site otherwise half the internet would be in legal trouble because of how easy it is to end up somewhere dodgy by clicking on a link. I wouldn't chat on there though to gather content because I almost guarantee that it's crawling with undercover agents.

I'm not well versed in this so that's why I asked.

I think all that happens is that your ISP takes note of it or something which ultimately shouldn't result in anything unless you're legitimately involved in kiddie diddling activity. Although considering the kinda shit this site covers, we're probably on a list of some kind anyways so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That said, Tor is 100% free and takes a whole 1 minute to download and install so you literally have zero excuse not to use it.

Good rule of thumb: If the site contains CP, links to CP, or is set up to link to CP in some manner, use Tor. If it's one of those "innocent" sites set up to whitewash pedophiles but is otherwise CP free, you're fine, just don't post ANYTHING on there, even to troll, without Tor.

Also, this hasn't happened to me YET, but tips if you DO accidentally stumble across CP.

1. DO NOT TRY TO ARCHIVE IT IN ANY WAY! Even to help the feds, DON'T. This is considered furthering distribution.

2. IMMEDIATELY WARN THE AUTHORITIES! I cannot stress this enough. You will not be busted if you do this ASAP, especially if you intend to help the government take down pedo shit. They may still wish to speak with you, but if you have done this, you'll be fine. If in the US, drop everything and tell the FBI.

3. Wipe your hard drive of any traces of that crap. Even if you never intended to see it, keeping it around in any form is a criminal offense that you can be charged for. If you contacted the authorities upon having found any, ask them what to do and follow their instructions to the letter.

4. Watchdog groups, anons, and other people are frequent help to the FBI or whatever cops in your country hunt CP, and if you explain your motivation and show them this thread in the event #2 happens, you should be in the clear. Just remember if you DO stumble across any CP, don't go back to the source, close out of wherever you found it (save the URL so you can drop a tip to the cops) and follow the above.

Also, at least in the US, merely having seen CP once is not on you legally. If you immediately report it and explain yourself, you'll be fine. If your ISP records (and the authorities will look for them) show a history of visiting CP content intentionally, you will be in deep shit.

I can't imagine anyone ever stumbling on to legit CP through places like boychat so I wouldn't worry too much.

I remember reading a thing on Cracked (yeah I know) written by someone who talked to a researcher who "infiltrated" a ring of honest-to-god child rapists and they're insanely paranoid about showing actual CP. Like unless you already have a stash on-hand, or are equal parts lucky, persistent and shameless no one is going to risk it.

I'd still use Tor though, if only as a kind of security blanket seeing as it's completely free, takes 2 seconds to install, etc.
