I didn't see a thread on this so what do the Kiwis think of it?
I'm wicked conflicted. On one hand, I think the world is set up to be interesting; on the other hand, I feel like they don't go far enough. Most scenes tend to not utilize the setting, ending up being a generic crime thriller with no fantasy elements. Critics have a hate-boner for this, maybe because Max Landis is attached but it's not that bad

Whether you like it or not, it's getting a sequel.

I don't think Max Landis is exactly Orson Welles, but his movies get extreme levels of hate for not actually being that bad. American Ultra is horribly reviewed but was at least mildly amusing, at least if you were stoned.

Rotten tomatoes is a mess and it blows my mind that it has so much relevancy nowadays. Ghostbusters 2016 is 74%, when the veeeery similar Pixels is at 17%. People flipped their shit over Lady Bird getting its 100% score downed by 1 when Pulp Fiction has 94%. Fucking Rogue One is valued higher than The Shining!

I agree it has more potential than it realizes (yet?) too much action, not enough fantasy, and Will Smith’s character is such a fucking cliche at this point it almost hurts - but I didn’t hate it and would watch the sequel.

Max Landis is weird.

I wouldn't really call him a good writer (except maybe his Superman stuff), and he's honestly kind of a cringy tool, but I don't hate the dude or anything. He comes off as a nerdy douche that makes a lot of half-decent movies to watch while stoned, but critics fucking hate him. I can't fathom why, either- nothing he's written is even that bad. The sad thing is, a lot of his stuff has really fucking good concepts that are honestly a few drafts away from being pretty good.

He either needs to grow the fuck up (which is unlikely), or get a writing partner.

Honestly, I go by the public score over the critics any day. And as far as I see, Star Wars was a piece of shit judging by those ratings.

But critics fucking hate him. I can't fathom why, either
Critics tend to be paid, and are more like the BuzzFeed of the movie industry. If it doesn't come from Michael Bay or have their sponsors, it's a shit flick.

Mind you though, I can't wrap my head around why we let adults rate children's movies still.

"Serious" Will Smith with Max Landis that one fag from Best of the Worst's screenplay is just what the viewing public wants!

Sounds like a more fun and proper popcorn joint than Star Wars is... I might give it a watch, even though your arguments encourage me to tread lightly, otherwise.

I haven't seen it yet but I love the idea of a modern/urban fantasy setting that grew from a stereotypical fantasy world.
It's actually pretty good.
I think the setting and ideas they're going for lend better to a tv show than a 2 hour movie, but it's got some really neat concepts on display, and I enjoyed it.
There is a show that has almost exactly the same premise: Fairytale characters in a realistic setting. Ended very recently too.

I actually love that movie than most fantasy movies because it's original and very refreshing. And it interpretated everything I want unlike the new star wars movie.

I only had a problem with one major section of the movie, the 20 min Mexican gang chase that lead to the strip club. In a world supposedly full of fantasy creatures, they only used humans.

Star Trek and Star Wars exist with gleep glops running around all over the place, nobody would be turned off if the underbelly of the city was full of freaks. I guess they had to cut the budget somewhere but the fantasy element is the only thing that separates it from a generic Training Day ripoff
