Not a bad list, in my opinion.

Also, you can expect only a couple of Miyazaki films, AKIRA and Audition – the latter that I just so happened to watch a couple of months ago.

Shall We Dance? is a movie I haven't seen in many years but I remember loving it, so seeing it on the list was a nostalgia hit to me. Been trying to find it again lol, actually didn't know that it's quite a widely-renowned movie not just in Japan. At least Satoshi Kon's swan song made it to the list.

Yeah, it's nice to have a list all in one place. I'll have to bookmark this (or at least the archive).

they have only one beat takeshi film Sonatine. Nobody knows and Tetsuo was pretty good. audtion and eureka were pretty boring.

No Battle Royale? Shame, it's had quite an influence on other entertainment over the years.

I'm dissapointed that Battle Royale, Yojimbo, and Ugetsu Monogatari didn't make the list, though I can understand a film collective not wanting to fill the entire list with popular picks over other less appreciated movies.

The inclusion of Kore-Eda Hirokazu films does help make up for that though, the man's amazing at tugging at heart strings.

It's not necessarily their 100 favourite Japanese films since they were limiting it to one per year so other films that probably should have made the cut like My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies are left out because they came out the same year as Akira.

I mean, I like Summer Wars too but I don't think it'd be on a top 100 if they weren't limiting selections to one per year. I suppose not much else in the way of feature films came out of Japan in 2009 worth mentioning on a BFI list.

For a country that thinks all Japan produces if pedophilia that's not a bad list. Have they ever released a Russian or Chinese list?
I mostly watch Period and old Japanese horror movies since they do horror right, followed by some comedy. Not a huge fan of Japanese modern dramas but I've watched some, I prefer their romance stories.
