So the way the healthcare industry works, but isn't talked about often enough, is pretty bad. How it ends up working out for the average joe too poor, is fine. It's dudes like you and I who are for one reason or another without insurance, and when handed a bill assume that's what you owe, it is non-negotiable. This isn't the case. I was never the dude in the ER for nothing, but I had to go a few times before I could afford insurance. The first time I just paid the bill grumbling about the same bits as you, rightly so. The next time I knew the system and offered to pay half in installments and they readily accepted. They expect to get *nothing* back from the uninsured. The rates are high because they're designed around making the money they need to stay open and conduct business entirely from insurance companies paying out for their customers. So a stupidly lesser known fact is, they don't expect you to pay anything but you can negotiate pretty much whatever you want and they tend to agree with it for the sake of collecting what they can from a lost cause.
But in the end you are correct, the system is borked at every level and a big part of it is the middleman of insurance. Did you know that even our public insurance through the government for the poor and elderly is farmed out to a regular ass insurance company on a state by state basis? Brittany is pretty retarded though if this is why she's supporting single payer/Universal Healthcare, not because it's a bad thing but because everyone in the US should have insurance now since the government is subsidizing it since Obama was president. Those who do not have it are in the same pool as DSP mentally.
