Since no one's said it here yet, it is really ironic that a guy whose work includes witchcraft, various magical races, pregnant males, crossdressing, gay jokes (most hardcore Chrisitans wouldn't feature shit like two males cuddling while asleep even as the butt of a joke), ghosts, pagan gods, pseudo-gods, and a ton of suspected fetish fuel turns out to be a religous nutjob that wants to impose a puritanical stranglehold on entertainment.
I recall him mentioning seomewhere in an interview that he wanted to seperate his work from is beliefs which I could respect, but that narrative goes down the drain considering his “entertainment is polluted and sinful” narrative. Also, he stepped in after fans started making gay fan art and pushing their headcanons on his characters. I mean yeah, fans often make creators feel awkward but a lot of them don’t call it out because of the Streisand Effect.

I watched the OAXIS Kickstarter and the gist of it is that it’s YouTube/Netflix for hardcore Christians. Hartman mentioned that if you submit content then it has to be approved by mods before it’s posted... which gives me the idea that people should submit Danny Phantom and all of Hartman’s other cartoons to see how well that goes :story:

Hartman also didn't like people making porn of his characters, which they still do. Speaking of the Streisand Effect, he's currently going through it.

This makes me so conflicted. Butch's Twitter is really chill and fun and he gives good advice tidbits. While I'm not on board with his cartoons anymore, he genuinely seems like a good guy who likes to have fun. I heard about the controversy and brushed it off as angry fedoras and tumblrinas but.. Jesus. I don't mind people clearly influenced by Christianity and I'm all for having a religion to help you but, yeah.

Oh well. Another animator to unfollow for me.

Shit really stings. I met him in person last October at a con after waiting around his booth for him to return from break. When he asked if I had been waiting long I replied "well I've wanted to meet you since I was 11, what's an hour?"

It now feels like I helped feed his ego.

Not to be THAT guy, but you forgot to add that his wife(JulieAnn Hartman) is/was a big time supporter of Andrew Womack. Andrew Womack believes that "faith" can cure all, and has a ministry where his teachings/jesus can cure physical ailments. http://www.awmi.net/video/healing/hartman-healing-testimony/

I wouldn't be surprised if Womack or Womack's subsidiaries are involved in the network.

I'll have to wait and see if Butch is really an lolcow. At the moment, I don't really think so. Him being a fundie is nothing new and that hasn't really impacted his work in the past, but he was working for a company and not himself. The Kickstarter is shady, but I've got no reason to think he'll cut and run with the money. There's a strong possibility that whatever he puts out will be a laughable failure but that doesn't make it a scam. That's just a mistake.

There's a couple of family friendly streaming services centered around Christianity so his idea isn't exactly great to begin with. It probably would've been smarter to try to fund shows with good production values for those platforms.

I know fags were screeching at him but I think they were trying to bait him into saying something homophobic to ruin his name. I don't think he's a bad guy for not wanting people to post porn of his characters on places he'd see it. He's under no obligation to tolerate or pander to Tumblr nutjobs.

It could be interesting to know why he said that. Is there more than meet the eyes?:?:

Butch's joke is that Tara Strong took all of Mary Kay's jobs leading her to become depressed. It was a shitty comment made off the cuff.

I've got to check if any of the autists offended by that are mad James Gunn got fired.

I dunno man, it’s a shitty joke to make because it’s personal. Apparently Mary Kay and Tara Strong were really close, Mary Kay gave Tara a puppy. It’s made even worse in light of recent comments Butch has made about suicide, too. It’s also not like he’s apologized for literally anything he’s said so far either.

It's a shitty joke but a joke he just spouted out and probably didn't think much about.

How is that a joke? It's about as much of a joke as Andy Dick taunting Jon Lovitz about killing Phil Hartman and "you're next."

Butch, I think, is from the same school as Doug TenNapel, only with more religion and less political sperging.

Like, I can't fault Butch -to an extent- for wanting to live out his faith, especially in a heavily secular industry/state where people can be openly hostile to anyone who isn't atheist/agnostic. But he's sort of like the inverse of his contemporary, Seth MacFarlane, in a weird way. Whereas Seth is a hardcore atheist, Butch is a hardcore (non-denominational) Christian. Both the same kind of obnoxious and preachy, even to those who might agree with them.

I think if Butch was less super preachy about it, and more about showing the tenets of his Christian faith in his work in ways that everyone can appreciate (i.e. love your neighbor, helping those in need, standing up for the defenseless, etc), he'd probably have a lot more success in getting his message across. After all, JRR Tolkien was a devout Catholic, and his 'Lord of the Rings' books were influenced by his beliefs (without being obvious about it, unlike CS Lewis), and they're some of the best selling books of modern history, beloved by his fellow Catholics, Christians, and of every faith/non-faith stripe.

Most people will remember Butch for how awful the Fairly Oddparents turned out to be and Randy Stair.
