Mauler is the opposite of Vidya Game Dunkey who can make his points precisely and succinctly. Trying to foot it through a Mauler review is like being crushed alive in a trash compactor, slow, grueling, filthy, terrifying, exhausting and stressful. Not even Sargon's videos do that. Dunkey's videos are like getting into a hot tube on a private jet by comparison.

Holy cow, this subreddit has some serious beef with Mauler, there are posts going back months.

The more serious posts on that site indicate an extreme lack of self-awareness and tunnel vision.
Memes aside, these guys like all the "real" video essayists (Lindsay, Hbomb, Folding Ideas) and look down on those dumb fans for not liking "kino".
They also love to crack jokes about forced diversity, altrighters and the general stupidity of people for complaining about such nonexistant topics.

Not to mention that "summary", erroneously claims that Mauler: strokes his own ego, believes characters should remain the same throughout a series, misunderstands the themes of TLJ, thirsting for objective criteria/standards by which one can judge art (while the participation medal analog is reaching, it's not out of line with other reviewers suddenly declaring certain media to be misunderstood/masterpieces) is wrong, mistakenly shows how people parade their opinions as fact, doesn't get how a craft can evolve over time, wants entire essays jammed into his movies that explain every little detail, misunderstands what a soft reboot is (when many might just loathe the concept), makes his point in relation to Patrick H. Willems' "movie for children" (even though he doesn't use it as such) as an excuse for the insane length of his series, is a hypocrite for pointing out others nitpick his videos in turn (which is exactly what happened, btw), misunderstands Finn's arc in TLJ (when Finn changes motivations on a dime and he never truly walks a neutral path), etc.

I could go on, but most of what is said in that reddit post is incorrect.
The stuff I chronologically left out is valid criticism, though.

The writer of this seems obsessed that because Mauler calls one part bad and one part good it must mean that he thinks the entire movie is either good or bad, are these people insane? Good things can have bad things in them and vice versa.

Despite the length of his videos, giving credit where it's due, that really is the main draw of his content. I guess it's worth it to go to the trouble of bullet proofing your argument when you need to defend against smarmy shits like hbomberguy, but this is really more for his benefit than it is his audience, which I suppose is the point anyway. In that regard he at least deserves respect and recognition, but not my attention, necessarily.

Man those are some quality media criticism

The Bad Media Criticism ironically makes me appreciate Mauler for how much he doesn't copy the channels above. I'm not even talking about politics, the level of analysis the dude puts in to cement his point is pretty impressive, especially if you've seen the Amnesia vs Soma video. The bad thing Mauler has as a habit is oddly the same thing that these other channels share and their tendency to a-log people they don't agree with; A lot of Mauler's videos are just stuffed with portions where he just rips apart a certain person's claim and move onto the next which could have been made more succinct if he just responded to those arguments in a general way, which makes the video extremely inflated.

Like most people in arguing he could be obtuse to give himself a better boost

I enjoy listening to him, I like how ridiculously thorough he is, and I like how he's ballsy enough to call out other people on their bullshit while also admitting when he's wrong about some things.

I can agree he could stand to trim the fat a bit. He does seem to go over certain points multiple times throughout his work to the point where I think he might be running around in circles, but otherwise I think he's one of my favorite content creators as of now.

About time someone tackled TL;DW the channel.

Remember that secret unlisted Star Wars video someone linked us in the MovieBob thread? Took me at least 3 sittings to actually get through it, he and his buddies are so fucking boring and so long winded, he makes Bob look like the epitome of brevity. He could literally save a lot of time by just referencing past videos he's made on the exact same movie.

Now he's a big part of my sleep aid rotation (along with Sons of Kojima streams). Just use earphones, lower the volume and listen as the endless waffle turns into white noise that lasts for fucking hours. If you're not asleep by the end of it, then you need to visit your local physician.

Which is why I found it odd that in the MovieBob thread, he was rightly raked over the coals for his meandering diatribe, but in that same thread MauLer was praised for his.

This is because Bob got (rightly) designated as a lolcow.

This pretty much means that every decision of his is inherently bad and considered "content" solely because it comes from him, which is honestly retarded imo, if I'm gonna bash Bob for being long-winded and unfun, then I will do the same to Mauler or whoever else, the yardstick for stupidity doesn't change depending on the person.

At least MovieBob had fat ninjas fighting over the soul of video games or some shit, it was TGWTG bad, but at least it was (unintentionally) funny:
