Calzone Thread - Pizza's Tastier Cousin

So yesterday I had a p'zone from Pizza Hut, and I gotta say that it was delicious. Yeah I know there are better places to get a calzone from, but it was closer to where I live, and not bad for the price. A local pizza place makes awesome calzones, and you can even custom order one from a list of ingredients. Ever since eating that p'zone, I've got calzones on the brain, so I've been watching vids on youtube of calzone recipes. Might try making one over the next week or two.

I don't know what it is about calzones, but as much as I enjoy pizza, I'm starting to prefer calzones a little more.

So, to my fellow kiwis, anything about calzones (favorite recipes, the places that make the best ones), post away!

Try getting a Calzone from a food truck. It will definitely make you appreciate food made from scratch at home a lot more.

Calzones vs. strombolis. What's the difference and what do you prefer and why?

Calzones remind me of inside out pizza, while strombolis have more stuff inside.

I've never had a stromboli so I can't comment on those (though for some reason, the local pizza place that makes calzones has them labeled as strombolis on their menus, while the item itself is most definitely a calzone). That said, lately I've started to prefer calzones over pizza. As for differences between stombolis and calzones, from what I can tell, the big differences are:

-The way they are sealed. The easiest way to descibe it is: calzones are folded like a taco and then sealed, whereas strombolis are rolled like a burrito.
-The sauce. Strombolis have the sauce baked in them, whereas calzones have the sauce on the side as a dip.
-Calzones are usually made for one person, whereas a stromboli can be cut to be served to multiple people.
-Calzones were created with the intention of being eaten on the go (their name translates as 'pants leg')
-Strombolis are closer to sandwiches than pizza
-Calzones originated in Naples, Italy, while strombolis originated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

One of the local pizza places has a version of a stromboli where pizza dough was layered with pepperoni and cheese, with the pizza (still unbaked) was cut into slices and the slices rolled up, and while they're good, they're sadly getting to the point where they're putting less and less pepperoni in there.

When I was living in a different city, my local Kroger store sold calzones in plastic packaging (the type where they're sold frozen in a box, and then thawed, packaged, and labeled by the store), and those were pretty good, but because they were basically fully cooked to begin with means that upon reheating, the dough turned to a crackly mess. A calzone bought at a pizza place at a mall (the type where mostly lukewarm pizzas sit out on display, and they rewarm it in a quick oven, you know the type) wasn't much better.

Someday (soon) I need to make my own calzones if nothing else to improve my pizza-making abilities.

There's a local Greek family-owned pizza place in my town and I get a gyros-meat and feta calzone, I'll post a pic next time I get one.

Not necessarily true. I've had plenty of Stromboli without sauce baked into them... In fact, the majority, by far, have been like that. Sauce inside makes them stupidly messy and makes an already-difficult-to-bake item almost impossible to properly bake.
