Can one become a German citizen if one speaks Sorbian? -

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

Hypothetically, if an individual spoke Sorbian (Wendish) and wanted to immigrate to Germany and become a citizen does Germany recognize you as speaking an official language and therefore eligible for citizenship?

No clue, however I’m coming in early to say that before anyone goes the classic joke of “learn Arabic lol” do NOT consider it.
Arabic, like Chinese, is a tonal language. Which means learning it as a non-native speaker is like using a butter knife in surgery. Inefficient, painful and not likely to make doctors happy.

Nah. Sorbian is not an official language in Germany, only German is. There's a German language test as part of the process of becoming a citizen. The law (§ 10 StAG) specifically states "German language skills", not "language skills", so there's no loophole there.

Sorbian is an actual official language in the Sorbian settlement area in Germany.

if you can prove that you are of german descent, yeah
otherwise you'll probably have to go through the regular immigration process. but hey, it's germany, so basically just walk in and start applying for unemployment benefits, they can't say no and if you don't show them a passport that proves your citizenship in another state then they can't deport you either, so basically you can tugboat all you want and they're legally required to go along with it lol

Well, it's what's called a "regional minority language" in the state of Brandenburg much like Frisian is in parts of Schleswig-Holstein. Try to do file for divorce or apply for social security in Sorbian in Brandenburg or in Frisian in Schleswig-Holstein - not a chance.

Recognised languages are not the same as the official language. There are some benefits extended to recognised language speakers to nurture their continued existence, but they're expected to learn and speak fluent German first and foremost.

To immigrate you would need to learn German. If we were going with majority language speakers you would think Turkish would be a good second language...

Why would you even admit that you speak a languagethat sounds like a bastard child of Czech and Polish? There's a reason even slavs don't really recognize it as an independent language.
