It makes me gag to put this in a subforum devoted to art, but I don't think it's my call to designate him a lolcow yet. He's a creepy pervert turned queer advocate with a fetish webcomic targeted at teenagers and I can't believe this site doesn't pay more attention to this guy. Someone linked me to his latest comic whinging about how Patreon flagged his blog as 18+, and that was two years after he posted his first nude pinups of essentially his high school student characters. So fuck it, I'm throwing this at the wall to see what sticks.

There once was a time where Dan Shive was a sacred cow of the underground webcomic scene that consisted of things like Dominic Deegan, The Wotch, Megatokyo, City of Reality (RIP) and the like. Bad Webcomics famously opted not to include his work because gosh darn it, he was such a good and nice guy. However the last four years of political hyper-polarization has gotten to him, as well as his realization that he's queer as a four dollar bill, and he's definitely opted to cozy up to the Twitter justice warriors in every new scandal that arises.

Going to be honest, all his social media is really tame stuff. He's been a champ at refusing to engage too much publicly. However, you'll find lots of really inane shit that he's drawing instead (SHE'S 18 IN EGS CANON):

EGS... that is a name I have not heard in a long time.

Honestly, I'm surprised to hear that it's still around. Most of the old-school webcomics ran their course a ways back, and I'd assumed that EGS vanished into the past like all the rest. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

I think the reason there's no thread on him is that he doesn't seem particularly interesting as a person. Yeah, he's a gay pervert, but considering that he's not tweeting about moon wheat OR rocks, he's pretty tame by the standards of this place, especially if he has a Doug Walker-like unwillingness to engage in public.

Does anyone know anything about him beyond the gay pervert thing?

He gets a big "Meh" from me. His comic got featured as an Awful Link of the Day on Something Awful when that site was relevant (so like 15 years ago), and a much younger me thought it was really weird and fucked up, but it's 2018 now, and I've seen a guy who jerks off to fat girls cutting down trees, and Bryce Cherry, so it's practically vanilla at this point.

His art is weird, but not weird enough to be funny, and he's just competent enough in his art that it's not funny that way either. Calling him a 'closet pedo' is pretty unfair, as this is the internet, and there are communities that would gladly accept him if he wanted to draw openly pedophilic content, but he doesn't. It would probably get him more money in the long run.

I have him in the same category as DC Simpson - Edgy, for 2005........ but rendered obsolete by New Aught social media drama/artcows like Dobson who use their comic "skills" as a means to drive people to their political sperging, not as a means to just satisfy a fetish and, that's really it.

He's just not interesting, nor is his comic. I mean it wasn't a bad entry in the "obvious excuse for fetishes" era of webcomics, as things went, since it at least tried to have a story, and both the art and writing made (very slow) progress in improving. There were far worse and more blatant entries in that genre certainly.

There are a few things hilarious about him, like the fact that despite having more kinks than your father's garden hose after he's yanked it all around the yard and then shoved it up against the house he apparently finds the idea of actual sexual intercourse offputting. But that's more of a "Hahawhat" factoid than something worth building a thread around. The other hilarious thing is that yes, he appears to be going Full SJW, which is not a community or mindset that is at all conducive to kink, and generally leads to rather nonsensical attempts to resolve weird and impossible naughty shit with concepts of social justice.

But other than that, what are you gonna talk about? "His comic is bad!" Yeah, has been for awhile, but it's bad like a lot of uninspired and poorly-written webcomics are bad, what else ya got? "He's got a lot of weird kinks!" Yes, he does, but his approach to them is often so tame and handwringingly concerned with not forcing them on anyone that doesn't want them that despite being weird they also somehow manage to be boring at the same time. "He's trying to pander to SJWs!" Woo are you gonna flip your shit when you find out about this website called 'Tumblr'. I don't see a thread on him having a very long shelf life unless he starts really flipping his shit and going Full Moonbat or something, because his work is too bland to inspire hatred, praise, discussion, or more mockery than "Haha what a weirdo!" It's sort of like making fun of a Drizz't novel, the writing is competent if not inspired so not much to say there, the characters have just enough depth to avoid being complete cartoon characters so what do you do with that, and the same stuff you made fun of in the first one is the same stuff there is to make fun of in the sixth or twelfth one.

Time would probably be better spent making, say, a Jeph Jacques thread, that dude's kinks are less blatant and yet he's managed to thread them constantly throughout his entire comic, and his personal behavior is way more ridiculous.

If you want to see true horror, the EGS fan discord is a thing of beauty. Every psychotic tumblrism you could EVER imagine.

They installed some bot called "Pluralkit." Which is designed to allow "Plural identifying people" -- people pretending to have multiple personality disorder for attention -- to have multiple identities on the server at once. I watched last week someone have a screaming argument that went on for most of the evening... with himself.

And yes, they lose your fucking shit over it if you don't handjob their fake mental disorder -- while also pretending it's not a mental disorder and just totally a thing guys!

Never got too deep into webcomics, but I'm going to echo what @Jigglyjogglers said on this guy.

He's in that weird category where he's just competent enough to not be a proper lolcow and is more boring than anything nowadays and even if he's a fetishist weirdo, he seems pretty chill about it.

His artwork is weird and unappealing, but also kinda tame compared to the kind of shit that you see in most artcow threads.

Like anything that can be said about him has already been said, and if this were 2000 and not 2020, he might be worth a quick gawk in some random forum thread.

Given that's he's in the same medium that has Andrew Dobson, Sophie Labelle, and the troon who wrote the "New Guy" comic, he doesn't even stand out much as an SJW.

Now, if he does go full troon and becomes really obnoxious as an SJW, then he's definitely got the potential to be a good artcow.

Really, Dan Shive kind of strikes me as like a super-boring parallel of Robert Paul Champagne, in the sense that he's definitely a perverted fetishist into some really kinky shit, but he's not really predatory about it and he doesn't try to cloak it in political or social doublespeak either.
