Don't you have to really be fond of item creation to get into Atelier games? A lot of JRPG's have optional item creation game mechanics but my experience with (PS2 era) Atelier games is that item creation is kind of mandatory to get anywhere in the game.

Not that that's really much of a surprise since "Atelier" (workshop) is in the title of every game in the series (excluding the Mana Khemia spin-off games), but item creation-focused gameplay is a huge barrier to entry for anyone looking for a more casual JRPG experience. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with the series having item creation as a major gameplay mechanic, it's really just trading one form of JRPG grinding (levelling up through combat) for another (item creation), not that there isn't also combat.

I haven't played any Atelier games past the PS2 due to lack of PS3 or PS4 so I could easily imagine that Gust might have made them a little more "accessible" to casual gamers over the past decade or so.
