  1. I'm not sure. Magnus Bane is the bisexual vampire demon guy right? According to a fan fiction website Archive Of Our Own they're a more popular couple than the main couple.

Slash fan fiction and yaoi seems especially popular with teen girls and young women. I'm not sure if they'd willingly buy it in public particularly in more conservative regions. It's not exclusively porn, but much of it is porn. I think the massive piles of it laying around the internet speaks to some unexploited market. Bella only exists for girls to project themselves onto anyway, what if there was two Edwards.

It was a dark and stormy night when Sasuke Sephiroth Malfoy locked eyes with Blast Hardcheese.

  2. Surprise surprise, Casserole has been completely ignoring the fact that her show just premiered its second season. Her inaction speaks loudly.

In other news, I just recalled yet another plagiarism accusation re: The Mortal Instruments series. So, there's a series by Philip Reeve called The Mortal Engines. That name alone, yeah... There's other similarities; both plots focus on magical objects/weapons, both have characters named Magnus, the bad guy of both is named Valentine and is the main character's father, etc. And Reeve's books came 6 years before Clare's.

One of the Mortal Engines books is called The Infernal Devices, and is set in a Victorian England themed universe. One of Clare's other series is called The Infernal Devices and is set in a Victorian England themed universe.

This may be worth remembering because apparently Peter Jackson is trying to turn these Mortal Engines books into the next Hobbit-esque franchise, so look out for that film (and maybe a little drama) in 2018.

  4. I knew a bit about Cassandra bullying people when she used to be active on Fanfiction.net, but I had no idea she gotten even worse once her books became popular.

I remember seeing her books a lot in bookstores and was slightly interested in reading them until i learned that she had created several series for her stories. I think the publisher were trying to make her series, especially The Mortal Instrument, as the next successor of Hunger games and Twilight. Of course the movie flopped hard and the publishers decided to focus instead on Divergent, despite the movies for that book sucking as well.

So with the tv show, she's not actually part of the creative team? Does it mean that she doesn't get any say in the show despite them using her books? That's interesting. I wonder how much creative rights does an author keep for their books?

And yeah, Cassandra is a one trick pony. She really does just have one idea, which wasn't even originally to begin, and just run with it till it loses stream. Does her books even still sell?

  5. She originally was part of the creative team to an extent. She was involved with all of the casting decisions and a lot of the initial discussion of the direction of the show. She made frequent set visits for the first few episodes. She even thought she was going to get to write an episode eventually. Lol.

And then they kind of started just... phasing her out. Once the show aired and she started shit talking it on Twitter, the producers noticed. They didn't like that. They even jabbed back a few times (i.e. cropping her out of every picture). For season two, she got to look at some of the audition tapes, but not be involved in the actual casting decisions, and they might have told her what they were roughly planning on doing, but that's it.

I think the show pretty much has full rights of The Mortal Instruments and can do whatever they want with it creatively for as long as they want. However, this doesn't include her other series (which have overlaps) or novellas like the Bane Chronicles one that @Elwood P. Dowd mentioned. They already got in trouble in s1 because they casually mentioned some character they didn't have the rights to (from Infernal Devices or something) and Casserole shut them the fuck down real quick. She has not-so-politely stated that she has no intention of letting them have any more of her precious properties.

  6. Yikes! What a distasteful person. Terrible person online and in real life. So its only the Mortal Instrument series that the tv show is focusing on? With the way she acts, I wouldn't be surprised if the producers decided not to create shows based on her other stories.

  7. Yep. One of her series takes place in the future, and the Mortal Instruments characters show up but they're older and married etc. The TV show can still have the characters end up married for instance, they just have to change up the way things happen exactly, to avoid any issues.

  8. I'm just baffled that she's made so many mini series of her original books. Like I get it, its fun having a world that you've created and want to explore, but eventually enough is enough and it's going to get stale. Not too mentioned confusing for any potential readers who want to read her books.

Heck Stephanie Meyers recently wrote a new book that has nothing to do with Twilight, and this was the same author who thought it would be a bright idea to write a genderbent version of her first novel to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of twilight.

If Meyers could do it so can Clare.

  9. Interesting. I was going off of Amazon sales, which has Book One of the first series at #3400 or so, and has the Bane Chronicles at #20,000+. My (possibly incorrect) understanding of how books sell is that this gap is even larger than it first looks when it comes to unit sales. As in, a ranking drop like this isn't a gradual slope in sales, it is like falling off a cliff when it comes to actual product moved. This despite the former being published in 2006 and the Bane Chronicles being published in 2014. Possibly this difference is due to there being a lot more casual fans vs. the sort of fan who'd seek out Archive of Our Own and truly care about this sort of thing?

You're probably right in terms of paper books, but if you buy it in ebook format and nobody has a clue what you're reading on your phone or tablet unless you tell them. Then again, if you're fourteen both the phone and the Amazon account are likely under mommy's control. Dunno.

  10. I'm surprised how many second chances she's gotten over the years considering how terrible her attitude and people skills are. I love this video of her being introduced on a book tour, slurping a giant soft drink, ignoring the fans and host, and generally looking like she'd rather be anywhere else on Earth:

  12. Here she is at the last NYCC, crashing an interview with two of the new showrunners for Shadowhunters.

The guy on the left's reaction slays me.

Edit: Rewinded a bit because you can see him look over, notice her, his eyes widen in fear, and then he looks away praying she leaves.

  14. Even gets white knighted by no less than the "Teen Whisperer" John Green here:

'Course the defense consists of the first sentence saying how great and wonderful ol' Cassandra is followed by a nonsensical, vapid and contentless two hundred word meander, but it is a defense nonetheless.

  15. John Green creeps me out so much. I remember when someone on Tumblr called him "the kind of guy who is a dad and sits a little too close to his teen daughter's friends" and he posted a full rant about it and then threatened to quit Tumblr.

  16. Dang, that's so freaking rude. Like these are people who are creating a show based on your book and trying to get recognized for it, and in you go trying to hijack the conversation. Can Clare not survive without anybody talking about her and her books?

In contrast, look at how passionate the writers/creators are for the GOT series and how much they like working with GRR Martin, as opposed to how uninterested the writers are for ShadowHunters and with Clare.

I feel that Clare just thinks her books have changed the world and that she's as good as J K Rowling or even better. But her books are so-so and more people seem interested in the tv show because of how hot the actors are.

  17. That is completely unprofessional on her part. People probably paid money to get the chance to ask her a few questions and she outright ignores fans as though they were mere pests to her- even though it is those same fans who buy her books..

  18. Yesterday, one of the Shadowhunters writers was on a podcast talking about plans for a future episode to introduce the concept of "downworlder registration". Downworlders are The Mortal Instrument's metaphor for PoC, it includes the werewolves (black)/vampires (hispanic)/warlocks (asian)/fairies (middle eastern). So she wanted to do a political commentary about individuals getting tracked based on their race.

Today, Clam posted this excerpt from an upcoming book of hers. It's like half a page where the characters just talk about downworlder registration.

Did Clam copy the show? Did Clam post this to be petty? To try and stop them from doing it because they don't have the rights to her future bullshit even if she posts it retroactively? I really don't give a fuck, she's just awful either way.

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.
