I'm sure people still make fox and cat taurs, but the sci fi origin of them has been lost. That and it's really hard to make a fursuit out of them, unlike other special species.

I think they were big back in the early days of the fandom but that was pretty much it. They faded away and became one of those things that nobody cared about as the fandom shifted away from a large hub of people making their own worlds to people just buying art. Probably has to do with the Tolkien wannabes that had autisticly elaborate backstories for their fursonas (instead of just for OCs) that got rather annoying. Ever since it seems like that as a general public, furries are mostly interested in porn these days and not telling a story. You get tons of people writing, drawings, and creating worlds still, but the general public either doesn’t care or doesn’t have the time to pay it much attention, thus killing their motivation to do such things. Chakats were a weird hybrid of the two and sometimes does get popular as you see in the community surrounding NSFW text games these days. I think the reason they’re not around anymore is because they were simply a fad. Even when I was first figuring out the fandom existed I only saw chakats mentioned here and there as something that used to exist as opposed to something that did then and there.
Oh lord, this took me back fifteen years. Power level? That’s actually a creature from Neopets. The artist, ThirdPotato, is an unremarkable furry from what I can tell, but I remember at the time she and her sister were making (what I understand to be) technically advanced fursuits for the time. They did not age well, however.

That chakat suit concept just looks like something fart fetishists would take advantage of. You know that type of weirdo would love getting hotboxed in that thing with their face on the person's ass.
They both were and weren't. Circa 1999, I met a guy whose fursona was a Chakat. Specifically and very definitely, A Chakat. He was very insistent on this fact. From what I recall, most species fans insisted the extra pair of paws (the weird middle legs) were supposed to be handlike, I guess as proof of their right to be flying around in space/against just being fap material.
The pronouns shi and hir fell out of favor in the early 00's, followed shortly by 'hermaphrodite' due to muh transphobia. Fanmade pronouns are always fucking awkward, and I think the Chakat crowd had stopped using theirs out of shame due to artists like Winger making fun of them for years.
They're ultimately goofy-looking and dumb as hell, as with most fan-based races, but have that extra dose of weird 70's sex-fi bullshit going on that makes them cringy.
If you want to draw a taur, draw a taur. You don't have to try and justify it, lol.

I think most chakat folk know about it already but god, it's surprising how little chakats there are to me now. Taurs sure, but chakats kinda hit the nail on the head for a lot of folk who simply wanted a sexually open rp character, especially with the hermaphrodite nature of the species.
You rarely see them now. I guess most popular species these days are just the trendy shit like protogens and potdragons, which seem to moreoften go for looks over lore. I kinda miss when people actually wrote interesting backgrounds to species, even if they were weird.
Fully agreed. The Chakat lore was also bait for sci-fi nerds, which were a huge proportion of Furry back when this stuff first came up and now barely exists.
Apologies for necroing this thread lol. I remember discovering this a good few years ago. Doove seemed to have a decent amount of tard potential but I guess neither he nor his creation ever amounted to much, right?
edit: Holy shit, apparently it's still going? I was under the impression that this thing as a whole had died long before I had the misfortune of uncovering it, but nope... The latest activity happened in Feb 2021.
Also, apparently there's MLP shit now? I was unlucky enough to stumble upon the atrocity that is Chakats maybe four years ago (so maybe 2017?). I don't recall seeing anything MLP on the site when I had originally found it, but it's also been a number of years now.

Chakats just never really stayed with the fandom outside of the geekier sides of the fandom, for better or for worse. However, with that Avali species from RyuujinZero that is a much better handled sci fi species and doesn't have any of Chakat's womandick fetish attached to it, I doubt Chakats will be making a comeback for a foreseeable while.
