Yep. Debt collection companies are the scum of the Earth. They buy debt for pennies on the dollar and launch multiple harassment campaigns. They will call your family, your employer, play fuck fuck games with you. The only way to fight back is to know the law and practice enforcing it. They generally leave the smart, aggressive people alone because it's to much hassle. The dumb people? Target numero uno. Barb abd Chris are exactly the demographic these shitbags love. Barb reminded me of another court date with one of the debt collectors that was going on this morning, so we went to the court house and updated that; the monthly payments on that continued and have been made in keeping up with it.

He's making payments to various debt collectors on something like $11,000 at 6% interest plus court fees every time he has to show up for a case. For $1,000 he could hire a bankruptcy attorney and have this all done with. While that's not an option for Barb due to 14BC, it's absurd that Chris is actually giving money to predatory companies like Midland and Portfolio Recovery; it's not like paying them off is going to save his credit rating and it's going to take decades to pay them off at the amount Chris can afford to send them monthly.

I would argue that the scum are people who take out multi-thousand dollar loans that they know they can't afford in order to buy toys and broken furniture, refuse to pay it back, and then force people to run around playing Metal Gear Solid to try and get it back. They really aren't because they're not actually getting anything. It might look like they can, because of the property, but any judgment liens they get are going to be superseded in their entirety by the mortgage, which considering Barb probably has it as mortgaged as it possibly can be, is going to completely consume its value, leaving them with nothing.

I also doubt Chris is ever paying any of these off. If he hasn't figured out there's pretty much nothing they can do anyway, he probably is going to keep up what he's been doing, i.e. pay minimum balances on the cards he has that haven't been canceled yet and immediately maxing them out again, and then just stopping paying whatever he actually can't afford any more.

So bottom feeders like PRA buy up all kinds of this low value debt for practically nothing and then churn through factory style litigation, getting enough suckers to pay them off some part of their debt to turn a profit. They don't have to collect on many at all to make more than the rock bottom prices they buy this junk debt for.

While they are scum and PRA in particular the bottom of the barrel, these bottom feeders do actually perform a useful function in the shitty debt economy. You don't find bottom feeders where there isn't shit to eat.

I see where you are coming from. However. these places often know exactly who they are lending to. They loan to trash like Barb and Chris and take a gamble. If they lose they write it off through taxes. Then the scum debt collectors pick it up. It's a scam all the way down and trash like Chris and Barb don't know and don't care. None that we know of. Debt collecting isn't as simple as calling up the bank or credit card issuer and making an offer, many states require debt collectors to be licensed and in some cases post a bond. Even then the bank has every right to not sell his debt or only sell it packaged with hundreds or thousands of dollars in other debts they plan to write off. Then there are complicated legal questions about whether to sue in state or federal court if the a-log had no ties to Virginia: Debt is a state court matter but can be moved to federal court if the plaintiff and defendant have no ties to the same state. This is called diversity jurisdiction and getting it wrong can kill an entire suit.

So it's not impossible but the time and price tag are enough to push it from a-logging over into autistic Illuminati and suing for debt you have no right to collect is, of course, illegal. If a troll wanted to get money out of Chris or mess with CWCVille s/he would probably just do what the Idea Guys did or enablers are doing instead, play along with him most of the time so they can squeeze in a few of their own ideas here and there.

If I remember right he budgets exactly enough for one month and spends the rest on toys. Even without Barb serious car trouble could be more than he can handle and that'd be compounded by his belief that paying minimums on credit cards is smart.
