Fans of the original Charmed have been unsure about what to expect in the CW’s upcoming reboot of the popular supernatural series, but after a screening of the premiere that took place at San Diego Comic-Con, it became clear that the show’s new stars are ready to shine.

THE CHARMED ONES
The premiere introduces us to the three new sisters who discover they are witches after their mother is mysteriously murdered. Oldest sister Macy (played by The Tomorrow People‘s Madeleine Mantock) is an extremely intelligent geneticist who was separated from her mother at birth. Middle sister Mel (Melonie Diaz) is a lesbian activist who is fighting to find out who killed her mother. Madison (Sarah Jeffrey) is the youngest sister who is more concerned with joining her college’s sorority than trying to hone her new powers.

Each woman brings something different to her role, but it is their charisma with one another that will really draw audiences in. Their personalities are all very different, with Jeffrey’s Madison standing out and bringing the laughs as a college student who vocally praises pilates when she successfully kicks a demon off of her.

TIMELINESS AND DIVERSITY TAKE CENTER STAGE

The updated version of Charmed brings us into 2018 immediately, with Mel hanging posters that display the phrase “Time’s Up” in regards to a sexual assault case that’s currently underway in the college town where the series takes place. And when a man defends the accused professor, he exclaims that the whole thing is a “witch hunt” — both a nod to the phrase commonly used by those speaking out against the Me Too movement and, of course, the fact that the show’s characters are witches themselves.

And when it comes to diversity, the reboot leans all the way in. All three sisters are women of color and it’s instantly refreshing to see. Meanwhile, middle sister Mel is a lesbian, and while it’s fantastic to see the LGBT community represented, it’s even better that her sexuality is not made an issue — it’s simply who she is. The loudest cheer at the Comic-Con premiere screening came during the panel discussion about the LGBT representation.

“You can’t downplay the importance of seeing yourself on screen and seeing your relationships validated,” executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman told FANDOM at Comic-Con. “That was one of the things we were really mindful of in doing the reboot.”

“Beyond the fact that [Mel] has a girlfriend and is a gay woman, we’re then unpacking the layers of what makes her a person and who she is as a human being and that’s the most important thing to us,” she continued. “I think it’s about treating that relationship the same as you’re treating any heterosexual relationship and letting different characters be heroes is a big part of what I’m excited about.”

Snyder Urman promised that the new season will give us “soap, magic, and real horror,” and we’ll finally get to see what that entails when Charmed premieres on Sunday, October 14 right after Supergirl on the CW.

Why.

Once again a reboot no one really asked for.

I don't even know why they even name this new show "Charmed" apart from doing some cash grab by appealing to some fans of the ancient show... I mean... three "witches" sisters with different personnalities it's not even that original of a concept, it's even a pretty common trope all in all. So really it could just have been a new show with a new name like "Bewitched" or something stupid like that and nobody would have even complain about the show being a ripoff of "Charmed".

Hell if you open a bit your chakras this formula is also the basics of "Wizards of Waverly Place" of all things (with two of the sisters being brothers).

I don't understand why doing a reboot of a show if you could just create a new one. It just screams that the ones in charge of this project aren't that confident in their ability to create a good tv show and so must use existing materials and dumb fanbases to try to make what they do a bit succesful. It's just plain sad.

... This was my two cents on the reboot of "Charmed" and on all of the trash reboot era we live in

Not that the original was particularly sacred, but even then I figured it was safe from a reboot because it wasn't sacred. I'll never understand TV people.
Right. I don't expect these shows to last more than a season at that. Most T.V shows are usually cancelled because of low ratings.
Not on the CW. Their audience has a special taste for shit.*

*Last I watched anyways...

Please explain to me what WOC's are named stereotypical white girl names like Macy and Madison?

The original was just an excuse to have three hot chicks in increasingly ludicrous fetish gear, so really, this is kind of a step up.

Like Xena, only in modern times.

Oh please don't bring back Xena and ruin it. It already was practically about a lesbian couple anyway.

So they reboot Buffy as a woke lightskin slayer of color. Now the Charmed sisters are a proud LGBT brown girl family that looks black/hispanic.

Only one has natural hair? Why the two good hair Beckys? I thought this was 'posed to be woke?

Tumblr's probably full of new WOC charmedkin already and they're telling white girls they can't be kin because it's appropriation. I guess it was too much to go the troon route. I don't know the rules about Charmed magic because I really didn't watch it much. But if they have to be women to use the magic maybe that was an issue that the producers didn't want to deal with by adding a troon. Would have been a fun addition to the trainwreck this is going to be though.

It's not that one character is a lesbian or they are all WOC. It's the way it's marketed as woke. As if that's the only selling point and the only reason you should be watching it. They are literally advertising the reboot as "OMG! LOOK AT ALL THIS DIVERSITY!"

This does not bode well for the quality of the series. I'm sure it will be more cheapo entertainment with girls dressed just sexily enough to not ruffle current year feathers. Then at least it gets some ratings from ronery guys who don't have a date that night.

What's next? Maybe Baywatch? Here comes fat, trans lesbian Mitchelle lumbering down the beach in a red one piece to save you from drowning. Hobie is autistic otherkin and C.J. is a feminist who walks around the beach berating men for being part of rape culture. She also has dangerhair and problem glasses.

Maybe they could bring VR Troopers back but it's all about crusading against cyber bullying.

They have run the movie reboot machine into the ground several times already. So now they have to go to television. They can't even make it work like Star Trek where it's a series of related, but not dependent on each other to enjoy series. They just have to come in, erase the original because it wasn't woke enough and push the new one as the series.

Come up with a new idea or expand on the original universe in a way that appeals to both new and old audiences. That's how it should be done.

This is going to become a bigger and bigger trend until it finally mercifully explodes. Thank the gods that rebooting Knight Rider has never worked out because no one will accept anyone other than The Hoff himself in the driver's seat. I do not want to see proud lightskin lesbian woman of color driving KITT, who now has a woman's voice for some reason.

I don't understand why all these major studios and companies are willing to just throw themselves off the top of a building over and over when they dish out all these worthless shows that make no money or ratings because people don't like being patronized. Woke shilling doesn't sell. If you want diversity in your product, fine. But do it tastefully and don't make it the key selling point to a bunch of disgruntled fans that just want to see justice done to their favorite show or movie.

Bending over to the #Woke crowd never works. They're like hippies, they don't have money and whatever money they're gonna spend they're not spending on corporate shill shit like this. But they're worse than hippies. Hippies might not like your shit, but SJWs will keep chomping at the bit until your career is six feet under. Give them an inch, they're take 1000 miles. Even if you meet all their demands, they'll just come up with more to bitch about.

The original was just an excuse to have three hot chicks in increasingly ludicrous fetish gear, so really, this is kind of a step up.
Most of this happened after two of the three stars were "promoted" to executive producer. After that point, the show basically became self-insert fan fiction for the producers.

Wasn't this show just a very shitty Buffy knock-off, which is itself getting a woke remake at the moment, too?
it's more a knock off of the film The Craft (they even used that cover of How Soom Os Now that ended the film as their theme song) but definitely was green lit after Buffy blew up.

This. The original show was, honestly, shit, so a remake doesn't have to be bad. Changing the race of the central sisters can even work, especially if they infuse their magic with some of the stuff from ... whatever cultural origin they're written as. That could be interesting, though they're unlikely to do that if they're mostly worried about being woke, because that leads to accusations of 'noble savages' and 'cultural appropriation' and other bullshit Tumblrisms.

So it doesn't have to be worse than the original, but using diversity as their main selling point suggests it's going to be dreadful, just in a different way. They think that they're taking risks with their choices, which suggests that they won't actually take any real, interesting risks with their storytelling.

It's difficult for me to get "angry" at this show, (any more than I would at any other cancerous social justard show I mean). Literally all I remember about the original is that it was a shitty Buffy ripoff. With that said, I bet they run this shit longer than the original (Which apparently got 8 seasons, holy shit) just so they can keep patting themselves on the back for being "woke".
