Cheap Chinese Shit Thread - aka "possibly have your card stolen to get 10 USB cables for $2"

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

We all know those direct from China sites that sell cheap electronic accessories (such as AliExpress and DealXtreme), possibly fake, for an incredibly cheap price and shipping that takes 3+ months. Have you bought any stuff from these sites recently?

I just bought 3 USB 3.0 drives from AliExpress for about $10 or so. I don't need them for anything important, mostly to load Linux ISOs one time, and maybe to keep around for just that. Nothing that important.

I usually buy clothes from Banggood and Aliexpress, but I've gotten some pretty good quality electronic stuff for basically nothing. Only thing I can advise you to look out for is that if something controls with a little remote that takes a coin battery, you're probably best off looking for another product because those remotes are notoriously unreliable.

Last year, I got an off-brand portable media player that's kind of like an iPod but also with a potato-quality camera though I didn't get it from a Chinese website, I bought it from a Canadian overstock store that sells cheap Chinese electronics (as well as name brand electronics that are also mostly made in China). Aside from the blurry camera, it works fine.

Also last year, I bought a pair of 64MB Playstation 2 memory cards from a dubious brand (HDE?) through Amazon but they work as advertised.

ADDENDUM: Come to think of it, one annoying thing about the media player I forgot to mention is that, if I want to watch videos on it, I have to convert video files to the exact resolution of the screen since it won't scale videos at all. But I really only needed it to play audio files and for that it works fine.

I bought an Earthbound SNES cart from banggood for $13. Works great. It's just made out of cheap plastic and the screws are fake. It just kinda snaps together.

I also got one of these things:
5-1-inch-big-screen-X9-handheld-video-console-Street-Fighers-Final-Fight-game-player-for.jpg

The Gameplayer X9.

It's weird and quirky (check out the NO/OFF power switch) but I got it for $23 when everyone was trying to sell it for $60.

Works great for everything except SNES games unfortunately, which sucks because that's the main reason I got it. Plays them just a bit too fast to where the music and gameplay is just... off.

All in all it's not godawful though. I've got actual consoles that of course are far better, but I'm just a sucker for weird offbrand Chinese stuff.

I admit, I fucking love AliExpress. I always have a few things coming from there at any time. I do have a few rules, though.
1) No Electronics (made that mistake once, never again).
2) Nothing that is meant to ingest or put on my skin (like makeup/skincare).
3) Nothing over $20.00. Most things I buy are under $5.00. I currently have a phone case, phone stand, storage basket, and zipper envelopes coming. All that together is under $10.00.

I buy pointless shit from wish when i'm bored. Then I forget all about it and am totally surprised when it shows up weeks or months later. It's like Chinese Christmas. I usually end up throwing or giving most of it away after a while. It's like the internet version of those gumball-machine toys in the supermarket when you were a kid.

Before AliExpress/DealExtreme I used to enjoy going to turk/arab stores, they sold some groceries, cigs of dubious origin and the most gaudy electronic trash, clothes and jewelry I've ever seen. Rednecks and white trash might have bad taste but truck nuts and singing fish looks like they belong in the Loure when compared to the arab shit.

The only thing I've bought from DE was a flash cart for GBA. It was cheap, good and the software was inscrutable. I also know someone who bought a pair of leather shoes for $3 just to see what it actually was they were passing off as leather at that price. It was pressed cardboard with a glossy leather-ish print on it, they smelled like cat piss and fell apart as soon as they came into contact with anything damp, like the mildly humid summer air.

edit: question, what's the clothing situation like on those sites? I'm looking for a zip-up hoodie that isn't t-shirt thin or too flimsy. I really don't feel like paying $80 locally for something that's just going to get oil stains on it, so do AliExpress/Wish sell anything that is ok?

I bought a 143-in-1 NES cartridge from Wish once. The build quality of the actual cartridge was solid, and all the games I tried worked. It kind of shits all over NES cartridge collectors, considering it was like $15 and has the majority of the really expensive games. Only problem is that, while it does save, it shares the same SRAM with every game on the cartridge. So if you start up a different game than the last one you saved on, your save gets wiped. So don't play the RPGs on there and you'll be fine.

I also bought a pair of $5 headphones, some kind that was a knockoff of Beats Solo. They were super quiet. Even cranking my phone to maximum, I could only hear barely a whisper. Those went straight in the garbage.

And lastly, I bought an iPega Red Knight controller for my phone that took about three months to arrive. It's alright for $20. Works with most emulators, not all (frustratingly, not Dolphin), has a pretty good battery, and only feels slightly cheap. The face buttons glow red with no way to turn that off, which is annoying if you play games while going to sleep. But it's the best mobile controller I've ever used. Not that that's saying much, because lots of mobile controllers are laughably bad. If controllers were people, the MOGA Pocket would have its own thread in the Lolcows section.

This could easily be the "shit I bought at Harbor Freight" thread. But no one wants to see my bungee cords.

I've considered taking the plunge on one of the Chinese Rickenbacker copy guitars but every time I think better of it.

I'm always tempted to throw $300 at one of these 4003 knockoffs but I've never been able to bring myself to do it.

It's not bad, but I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. 4/5 pairs of pants I've bought have held up really well and fit great. I've also bought a coat that was on sale for $60 when it's normally $200. It's probably my favorite coat, but I probably would not have paid more than that. Other things I've bought include some of the shirts in my signature which you can check on my profile page. I haven't checked out the hoodie situation yet, so your mileage may vary.

I used to buy cheap warhammer stuff of some pollution chink site, however it started to get expensive so I stopped.

The quality was genuinely ok for the price, you sometimes had to patch up the resin a little and clean it quite deeply because the mould release was fucking trash. But it was definitely worth the effort.

If it's something that you're going to get dirty anyway, you can buy decent hoodies at thrift stores for sub-$20 (and I'm talking in Canadian dollars here). I see some for sub-$10 quite often but I suppose I'm like you in one regard, I don't like them too flimsy either.

I once had a Tamagotchi from China. You could choose from Hello Kitty, a car and Doremon as your "pets". They died within an hour.

Other stuff I have gotten before were various charge cables. One nearly caught on fire.

I bought my girlfriend cosplay from AliExpress. Nornally it was from people who made it themselves.

Like I got her a 3D printed Tsuyu cosplay for $120. The funny thing about this purchase was that it was taking so long I just cancelled the order. The seller messaged me pissed off because it had sent and I just ignored them when they kept asking for the money back. Few days later my girlfriend got the cosplay and the seller tried settling the cancellation with Aliexpress who in the end took my side. So I got her a nice gift and my money back.
