I guess consider this the counter to this thread https://kiwifarms.net/threads/shitt...-seen-online-or-heard-irl.72735/#post-6856867

For cheap products, I love this moisturizer. My skin is pretty stable, but can be combination in the winter and summer, this balances it out.

As for homemade stuff, I make a lot of homemade masks. I'm wearing one as I write this that is blended dried rose petals, rose water, and activated charcoal for exfoliant when I wash it off.

I also like using rose water or orange blossom water as a toner, and I keep both in the fridge for cooling in the summer. I like making a super concentrated chamomile tea and keep that in the fridge to use for makeup removal and as a cooling mist when it's really warm.

Cheap
V05 shampoo and conditioner and e.l.f. makeup brushes

DIY
Dab of tea tree oil on zits (and canker sores) to dry them out

Various oils for 'oil cleansing'. Basically gently rubbing oil on your face to dislodge gunk out of pores, and then you wash the oil+gunk substance off with your main cleanser. My preferred oil is grapeseed, but jojoba, argan, and olive are also pretty popular.

Coconut oil as a hair mask. Too heavy and slow-absorbing for face skin, imo.

Chamomile tea sprayed on hair to lighten its color. Even more effective with sun exposure

A great tip for dry lips: Slather your lips in Vaseline or thick lip balm, use a damp soft-bristle toothbrush, and rub lips gently in a circular motion. Rinse / wipe off. I still do this from time to time in the winter.

ETA: If you ever run out of shaving cream, use conditioner.

Unflavored gelatin as a hair mask, rice water rinse - these add protein to your hair so be aware. I would use these instead of mayo or egg.

Lots of oils are cheap considering how many uses you get for the price. Olive oil, coconut oil, argon oil, rosehip oil are all nice. As a hair mask or a drop or two added to lotion is really nice.
I use unscented mineral oil (essentially baby oil but with no fragrance or vitamin e) to “oil cleanse” my face for several years and I’ve had a lot of success with it.

I like Suave Essentials conditioner, especially coconut. It’s like $1
I also use bleach on my hair at home. I’m brave and try to be careful lol it grows back. To tone my hair after bleaching and once every week or two I mix conditioner with a drop of blue-based purple hair dye, like Manic Panic Ultra violet. Has to be a blue based purple to tone the hair and not leave ugly pink stains.

eta: +1 for Vaseline or aquaphor. I love that shit. I have super dry skin and put a small amount on my skin at night on top of my other lotion. It’s good on cuticles too

Honey (raw, mind you, not the kind in those cute little bear bottles that have added sugar) is great for all kinds of face masks/gentle exfoliants...

Honey + olive oil + coffee grinds, leave on face for twenty~thirty minutes then gently remove with warm water; brightens dull skin
*add a drop or two of lemon juice for extra brightening properties, but might irritate very sensitive skin

Honey + olive oil (or grapeseed, jojoba, etc.), leave on face twenty~thirty minutes (or longer, if you have extra dry skin, I suppose!) and gently rinse off with warm water; softens

I've even seen some honey and baking soda, tea-tree oil, turmeric powder, etc. recipes for oily or acne-prone skin; I avoid those recipes though because I have very sensitive and dry skin, haha.

I thought that baking soda and lemon juice were too aggressive to use on your face?

I've never had an issue with baking soda, apparently it can whiten your skin. I only apply it very gently in the shower and don't have it sit on my skin. I find it gentler then other exfoliants because they usually have larger pieces.

I had big issue with baking powder— I wouldn’t recommend doing diy baking soda masks if you have dry and sensitive skin

I love to make my own bath stuff. I make bomb-like goodies. I mix in citric acid, baking soda, cornflour and salts (I use Epsom or Pink Himalayan) together and then I add a carrier oil (I like almond or coconut) and some nice essential oils until it is moist enough to hold a shape. I then put them in a mould so they form a shape and within about a day or so they're good to go. They last ages and smell amazing! You can also add dried lavander, rose petals, seaweed etc and some colouring to make them pretty!

Could someone recommend a good place (UK) to buy rose water? I'm a little bit of a novice. I do have rose essential oils and rose water tones though. :optimistic:

I like to make my own homemade body scrubs using sugar and flaxseed oil. Baking spices like ginger give it a light, pleasant scent.
The hardest part is getting the right balance of oil so it actually rinses off completely and doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy. Otherwise, I have to use actual soap, which defeats the moisturizing purpose of the oil.

I wish I could remember her name, but there was a chick on Instagram that made all kinds of homemade crunchy hippie vegan shit that was hilarious. She made a moisturizer that she must have been allergic to because it made her face red, she made vegan sun protection(???) that again made her red because it didn't work. A lot of things made her red/have a healthy glow.
Can't remember if she actually did or it was something we made up as a joke, but it is entirely possible that she made a face mask by soaking toilet paper tubes in cold water.
She was a bit like FitVeganGinger and her recipes.

Someone mentioned vaseline and winter up above, if you get a cold and need to blow your nose a lot, preemptively apply vaseline to it and the upper lip to avoid the pain of it cracking when the paper have removed all the oils from the skin. It also prevents the nose from getting ultra red. Go hard on the upper lip if you have a mustache, it won't tug on the hairs as badly.
