Chernobyl Miniseries (2019) -

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

I'm really shocked we don't have a thread on this. The show is kino, and, outside of some (imo necessary) abstractions, the story told is incredibly close to reality.

Chernobyl is an interesting topic that, like other major catastrophes, many people know happened but not many people know about. It has an excellent balance of drama, humor, and facts that really drive home the abject horror of the entire situation.

I think Chernobyl is a very good miniseries. It has really good cinematography and lots of compelling dialogue. I think the main issue people have with it is it contains a fictional character(Ulana Khomyuk) meant to simplify a lot of the drama around the incident inquiry. Other than that it's a very compelling series; a good representation of the Soviet Union's inability to deal with an unforeseen crisis due to its bureaucratic system.

I remember when we covered this in depth in training, and the whole class was laughing out loud. Not because of the deaths or anything like that, but due to the clusterfuck of fuckups that led to the whole thing. It was like a clown car of fuckups. "Hey lets do this safety test by first circumventing or preventing any and all safety equipment from functioning! What could go wrong?"

Five minutes later...

"Shit. Let's hope nobody noticed that"

Has the miniseries been fairly accurate so far?

Haven't actually watched it. It's a fascinating story however you look into it. I remember reading one book about it, over a decade ago so I have no idea what the title was, but it mentioned how they gave women sanitary napkins, and didn't bother to warn them about the fact that they were covered in fallout causing them to get radiation burns down there. They literally had people not just mining, but also shoveling the fallout back into the pit from above. Some of the workers described seeing the heap actually, visibly, glowing. It says something about the survivability of the human race that everybody involved with the clean up didn't die in weeks, a lot did, but it almost seemed like more should've.

Edit: I think the book was "The Truth About Chernobyl" by Grigori Medvedev.

Ignoring the shoehorned female scientist, yes for the most part. A few other things are off like the helicopter crash happening too soon. Lots of eastern euros have been raving about how accurate the series is in terms of details - right cars, right clothes, right buildings, ect.

Also has a very dank meme game going.
