Anyone else mining or farming as it is for Chia coin with old spinning rust they had laying around? I don't give a shit about the environment but do like the Proof of Stake and Proof of Storage/Capacity concept. I wouldn't recommend buy HDD/SDD for this but seems a fun gambling experiment.

EDIT: Also should note it uses almost no power or network bandwidth (well the latter for now)

I think it also requires CPU or RAM so a drive isn't enough. The Chinese farmers have purchased so many drives that the market is in east asia is is undergoing a shortage and price inflation.

Now Twitter is showing a news article from an hour ago talking about Chia. Can't wait for it to be hyped the fuck up and for it to be impossible to get an SSD. Thank fuck I recently got a terrabyte drive. At this rate I can't see myself upgrading my PC any time soon, all we need now is a coin that uses RAM.

I'm screwing around with this with a scrap 1TB laptop drive. From the getting started guide it seems sort of pointless to use SSDs at all, all it really does is decrease the amount of time it takes for you to create your plotfiles (it suggests generating them on a SSD and then moving them to rust) and going from the progressbar it's going to take around 30 hours per 200GB plot. Looking at the RAM/CPU usage it's taking I could easily just cram more shitty low-capacity HDDs in and generate up to 3 or 4 in parallel, but I don't know if I care enough yet.

That explain why I couldn't find any decent size HDD for my NAS. The clerk mentioned about cryptofarming causing a rush on HDD but I had no idea what he was talking about with that.

Got some external HDD that are freed up now, wonder if its worth bothering. Can't think of anything else to use them for now.

edit: Taking a glance at all this. Probably not.

Is there really any point to doing this now that the media and the Chinese are already all over it?

Doesn't seem to be. I'm running one plot with 200GB of space used and my estimated wintime is 15.9 years. That estimate is jumping up and down at random though and since the task isn't using much CPU/RAM now that the plotting is done I'm just going to leave it running to see if it goes anywhere.

ETA: Total network size has grown from ~5600PiB plotted to 8000PIB in the last 4 days, taking the time to win from 16 years to 24. This is probably not worth caring about unless you're willing to dedicate >10TB to it, and fuck that. When pools get implemented this might be a different story though given it costs nearly nothing to run, is easy to teardown if you need the space, and doesn't slam your IO aside from during plot generation.
