So, to get this ball rolling, I'm about halfway through the latest season of Orange is the New Black, and I don't feel like the concept for this season is working all that well. I want to like it, and there are some genuinely great moments in every episode, but I feel like the show is almost a parody of itself, a lot of the time. Also, a lot of good characters have been reduced to comic relief, which is kind of lame. I'm reserving judgement on the season until I'm done, but it feels a lot like a failed experiment.
I just watched the season premier of Orphan Black, and considering that it was the opening episode of the final season of the snow, it was underwhelming, and it retread a lot of already well-covered ground.
Has anyone been watching The Handmaid's Tale? I read the book in high school, so I know how depressing the subject matter is, and I haven't been able to convince myself it's worth it, to watch a show that will probably make me feel miserable.
I'm only episode 3 or 4 and I don't know if I'm going to keep watching. The last seasons were so binge worthy and this just can't keep my attention and make me want more. It's trying too hard to mix edginess and comedy - people complained that there wasn't enough humor in the last seasons and I guess they want the controversial factor so it's resulted in this edgelord mess that just feels like a parody of itself.
I really hate how Poussey's storyline has been sidelined already - like Tasty has been so rightfully emotional over it and everyone else is ignoring it in favor of sticking their fingers up guards' asses and talking about Hot Cheetos. I understand that it's sort of realistic in the sense that most people don't know Poussey so they don't care but even the other black girls are ignoring it, it's so frustrating. And Crazy Eyes' "tribute" felt so cheesy and ingenuine

I may have been spoiled by Wentworth (goes by Wentworth Prison in some countries I think). It's an Australian show, an homage of sorts to Cell Block H, with chicks in prison but much grittier with really tense moments. I've not seen the latest season yet though.
I love Wentworth! Or Wentworth Prison as it is here (UK). The first series in particular was amazing. Series Five has just started here, it's become a bit sillier and a bit more OTT than it was in the beginning but it's still great viewing
I wondered how it'd be after the major finale of season 4. I can't wait to get stuck in! Have you tried Locked Up? It's available on All4 in the box sets section. A Spanish (subtitled) show about women in prison. Similar vibe to Wentworth but a chunk of it is set outside with the family and police. It's really good with lots of "how can this possibly get any worse for them... oh that's how" moments. I'm gutted they only made two seasons then it got cancelled but it wraps up pretty well.
I've started watching the fifth season a bit back (since its the earliest available season on Amazon Prime). My friend is REALLY obsessed with it though, so it turns me off a bit. Regardless I still like it although I couldn't give less of a shit of the Alyssa Edwards/Coco Montrese feud. Both need to get their heads out of their asses. Ivy's my favorite so far.How about RuPaul's motherfuckin' Drag Race? I see so many avatars of queens on here. I stupidly bumped into, then voraciously consumed, a huge spoiler-filled write-up of the finale this past weekend. Still looking forward to the reunion and finale, though.
I'm caught up on both of these shows so far, except for this new episode of Orphan Black. Season 4 didn't feel like a whole lot of new to me either, but I'll end up watching Season 5 because I feel too invested and I've been enjoying it.
I can't say how The Handmaid' s Tale compares to the book, but I'm a fan of Elizabeth Moss, which is why I initially gave the show a try. As depressing as the subject matter is, I would recommend it.
Perhaps not a chick show, but I've been watching American Gods too. Again, I can't compare to the book, and I feel like it's slow going and somewhat confusing, but I still recommend it.

Also the OP reminded me how obsessed I was with America's Next Top Model as a teen. To the point where I denied that it was a sham of a modeling competition and the fact that I was sad that I would never get to be on there because I was too short. Also fuck Cycle 8. Jaslene was a bitch who looked like a concentration camp survivor. Natasha was robbed.
Have you seen Top of the Lake? It's a miniseries that starred Elizabeth Moss and it's getting a sequel soon. I'm pretty sure it's on Netflix.
I keep meaning to get Starz so I can watch American Gods. I am a huge Hannibal fan, so I worship at the altar of Bryan Fuller.
