The flooding that did occur was still pretty severe to the point it destroyed the majority of China's cropland for the foreseeable future. Expect food shortages, especially if Trump wins and the trade war continues or intensifies.

And keep in mind that the rain seasons are annual and even if Three Gorges Dam survived 2020, it's probably sustained a lot of undue wear and tear. If 2021 has a monsoon season that's as bad as 2020 was or worse than it, then the odds of the 3GD collapsing increase exponentially.

Looks like the dam held this year, so the next step for China is all the engineers celebrate their dam holding up to its design and inevitably cutting maintenance and other repairs to the dam and putting the money somewhere else (other dams, their pocketbooks, etc.). This gets them government praise for running a hugely profitable project (it's cheap after all). Then the minimal maintenance adds up over the years and the next time a 2020 (or larger) flood happens, the dam collapses.

I mean, the only reason it didn't collapse this year is because they blew a bunch of dykes and flood barriers upstream, so they could divert excess water onto farmland and into smaller cities and towns, where it wouldn't be noticed. Mass starvation is a small price to pay for the preservation of a hero project.
