A lot of Chinese citizens do have access to the outside internet, VPNs are common. They're trying to gather support with overseas communists.

It's less than you might think proportionally. Only 10-15% use VPNs regularly and only a third have ever done it, and it's pretty much always just for banned entertainment. Even though the political posters are loud there aren't really that many of them. It doesn't help that the Chinese on the normal net speaking English are disproportionately political, whether because they're more affluent and educated or just because they're from HK.
I've worked with highly-educated, English-proficient, Chinese. Only two have ever been (privately) critical of the regime and even they weren't using VPNs for more than movies, and I'm not sure both were using VPNs. Even the more political one bought into the "China can't be a democracy yet" party line, though he supports HK. The other ones are all apolitical and unquestioning. Even though "Marxist theory" is a required class for all university students they couldn't repeat anything from it; one didn't know what the Cold War was even though that figures heavily into Maoist theory. YouTube was amazing to them though and they were spending hours on it.

You have to bear in mind that there are legitimate reasons for them to support the CCP. In just 40 years, they have gone from poorer than African shit holes to a superpower. This is a miraculous achievement and a lot of them will thank their leadership for that. If Xi Jinping held legitimate elections, he would win in a landslide outside Hong Kong. Modi absolutely dominated a far election in India in 2019 after pursuing similar modernisation.
I use the Chinese language internet as well and some of them are well informed on history, though they tend to describe it with a nationalist slant (the Korean war intervention was necessary to stop American troops on the border, Mao had some successes and some terrible mistakes but wasn't entirely bad, etc). Formal education often doesn't equate well to political knowledge though (see academic Marxists).
I see all manner of absolutely pants on head retarded political takes on here in English, China is no different.

The CCP succeeded with economic devlopment only when jettisoned the substance of Marxist economics for the successful practices of Japan, South Korea and the other tigers, which, while not communism, is still not neoliberalist free-marketism either.
Ironically, South Korean economic growth came from learning from the methods of notorious Japanese rapist and fascist Kishi Nobusuke in 1930s Manchuria. Thus, indirectly, modern China has partly based its ideas on those of someone who wanted to rape and enslave their whole country.
Nasty as he was, though, Kishi had some good economic ideas and his model works out a lot better than communist bollocks. As for free market neoliberalism, that doesn't have the best track record when it comes to environmental issues or national security.

Japanese imperialism was clearly based on European imperialism, right down to greatly improving infrastructure and industry in the places they occupied - if for no other reason than to aid in exploiting the local resources, but it happened nonetheless, and that infrastructure and the related knowledge didn't go away when they were kicked out. The Wikipedia article on Korea under Japanese rule has some uncomfortable graphs about how Korea's economy industrialized and education rates increased in the first half of the 20th century. Japanese imperialism had the best parts of British imperialism… right alongside the worst parts of Belgian imperialism.
I remember seeing a handful of people from wuhan who appeared to be using twitter just like any other social media, and just uploading anything (obviously in mandarin only).
