I never fully understood why Chris opted to use Crayola markers to color Sonichu. Perhaps the reason is that he's used them his whole life and it's familiar or he likes that they're large and easy to hold on to. My point is they suck and don't come in a lot of colors and for what you get they're expensive. (Even though Chris doesn't seem to understand price checking various products to get the best deal for your money)
I understand Chris took several art classes in highschool, so he had to be introduced to different tools to draw and color with. Because let me tell you, they sure as hell ain't letting you use fucking Crayola markers in highschool visual art.
Is it because he doesn't want to learn how to use a new tool? Is it becuase markers take less effort to color stuff with?
Chris could get a decent quality set of pencil crayons for roughly the same price as a pack of Crayola markers. Pencil crayons create a nicer effect with a textured feel and it's easy to add depth with them. Hell, even crayons would look better, in the past I've managed to do some crazy stuff with cheap crayons.

I blame the fact that Chris doesn't want to change. Maybe he's worried that changing the art supplies would remove the "hand drawn" originality or whatever he calls it. It could also be due to his laziness. Chris doesn't want to put in the effort of finding decent supplies, so he goes with what he already has.

Yup, resistance to change and laziness are probably the biggest factor, he doesn't want to have to learn new techniques for coloring because that's like work.

Especially since more artists are using tablets to draw instead of the conventional pencil and paper.

Which apparently pisses him off because it "Doesn't have the character of hand drawn art" even though you are drawing directly on the tablet and the computer makes it go on your canvas. So it's the same damned thing.

Correct because you are using the pen it comes with but using colors you would not find in a Standard Crayola Crayon Box and the tablet acts like paper.

I can emulate the style of traditional art on the computer so Chris would never be able to tell the difference thus everything he knew is wrong and his life crashes down around him as he ascends to a higher plane of being.

Chris doesn't have the finesse it requires to use anything other than Crayola products. He uses marker because it's the quickest way to create blocks color and requires the least amount of effort. That doesn't piss me off as much as him not even sketching out drawings before producing final pieces though. Nope! He goes straight to drawing shitty artwork in pen and if a mistake's been made, OH WELL.

To add to that, it's also probably because he used childrens' art supplies when he was a small child (as we all did), but since he believes everything he does is right on the first try, he always just kind of assumed he shouldn't have to graduate to any other type of art tool.

It really depends on what kind of budget his school had at the time. This was the '90s, so we're talking about a time when middle schoolers still packed crayons, pencil cases and glue into their backpacks. My high school art class was taught by the football coach, who just sat there while we emulated shapes out of a textbook with pencil. It was not uncommon to see people using Crayola crayons and markers to finish assignments; in fact, each desk had a set of each. I joined the class for a semester just to fill in my second extra-curricular, but if I had actually been interested in taking an art class, I would have been downright pissed.

If Chris didn't spend his tugboat on McD's and Vidya he could afford at least one set of Letraset Promarkers. They're affordable and offer decent colour. They ain't your kiddy grade crap either, they're no copic markers but hey, for Chris they'd be a godsend. Then again Chris wouldn't use them for shading or anything like that... I don't think Chris knows how to use pencils to their full extent and we know his laziness prevents him from learning to do so. I don't know a soul who can use watercolour without it being a disaster so with Chris it's out of the question. His extent of knowledge with digital art is putting Comic Sans in over handwriting and fillbucketing colour on stuff. At least as far as I know.
Autism=Routine too. He buys the same sets because it's routine.

I dunno. Just throwing somethings out there.

I haven't been to a public school since the early 00s: What's changed? Kids don't have pencil cases or glue anymore?

Crayola markers are horrible for shading. Chris should have gone with Crayola crayons or Crayola colored pencils.

Yeah, I'm taking a few drawing classes here at the Art Institute and we are using traditional mediums... which is odd for us Web students given how we have not one but TWO Cintiq labs so theoretically, we shouldn't have to.

But yeah, I at least have a Bamboo tablet personally and work on a lot of projects here at school where they have the beautiful Cintiq monitors. I wouldn't debase myself by using fucking Crayola shit.
