It baffles me why anyone hasn't made a discussion thread about Chris and his depression. We all know he's depressed but could his sadness kill him or would something else kill him? (To be honest, I don't like to talk about Chris dying because it's simply sad. I always believed that there is hope for him but it would require extensive rehabilitation in a mental health facility. Since he's American and on the :tugboat: and lives in a state that allows autistics to apply for a disabled driver's permit, he should have access to such facilities for little to no cost.) I also want to know what are the causes of his sadness. I can name a few; his coddling parents, dealing with adult life, not having friends, not having a girlfriend, lack of job, improper eating habits, improper hygiene, etc. Are there any other possibilities that are making him depressed? Or better yet, what can make Chris truly happy? PS3s, Barb, dogs, they don't do anything for Chris and it's not really saving him from his depression. What's making Chris depressed or are there any solutions to his depression? Discuss.

Well, a leading cause for Chris's depression seems to be his living environment. It's a junk heap were he's constantly battling flies and other vermin, and he's constantly gawked at by his mother.

I'm sure that he still misses Bob.

Third, Chris hasn't gotten anything he's wanted out of life (to be fair, he hasn't worked for it, either.) On top, of that, his one hope/cherished memory was unveiled as being far less than he chalked it up to be. There's no pretty blonde wife, no daughter named Crystal, and he's on a comparatively modest budget compared to his spending wants.

Finally, I'm sure that his paranoia regarding trolls is having an adverse effect on him.

I'm guessing in a physiological sense or just the psychological sense? I tend to go with the latter but I'd be surprised if having excessive paranoid thoughts can cause some physical health problems. That's like saying having a lot of homosexual related thoughts, including gay jokes, would turn one gay.

Said it before. Good hygeine, good diet, and for him probably drawing, getting better at what he does, making wish fulfillment escapist comics, and lego structures could make a considerable difference in his general disposition. If he was cleaner and had actual food, not junk, in him and some exercise, he'd be so much more approachable.

These things can be hard to keep up for someone with depression, I know, but it's really worth it, and it can become a good routine.

Oh, depression and anxiety can have a very real toll on a person's body. This includes oversleeping/undersleeping, overeating/undereating, the development of muscular tics, paranoia, and at its worst, mild visual and auditory illusions (such as thinking you're hearing the phone ring, gunshots, etc) and suicidal ideation.

Chris has noticeably dropped some weight in some of his more recent photos, but I'm not really that inclined to contribute it to depression. He's been depressed for years and he's maintained a ballooning figure until this point. I'm more worried about his physical health--he may very well have fallen victim to a parasitic or viral infection that's causing him to lose water weight. Living in the hoard certainly hasn't done him any favors.

I was going to say that drinking excess amounts of Coca-Cola can cause unhealthy weight loss with the possible risk of kidney stones.

In all honesty if he just ate better and was active he would probably feel better, at least a little bit. It's hard to do with depression but you won't get out of it by being lazy and not working towards being a healthy individual.

It's really simple: Chris' life sucks for reasons we're all aware of and it deeply saddens him.

Chris is depressed because he honestly thought that by this point in his life he'd be married to a super-model, have a daughter named Crystal, Sonichu would be a successful franchise and he'd have that fabled office job. He viewed these events as inevitable. IT WAS PROMISED.

I wonder where Chris picked up the idea that dreams are "prophecies." It's possible that he picked up the idea from some of his early Bible studies (the story of Joseph and the coat of many colors comes to mind, as related in the Book of Genesis), but the cynical part of me says he probably got it from a cartoon.

Chris certainly knows that he's suffering from depression, since he's been BAAAWing nonstop about it for the last couple of weeks on Facebook. The problem is, like any other adversity in his life, he expects outside sources for solutions, like his highschool galpals coming to his rescue. But with a mental illness such as depression, the best way to treat it is proactivity.

That's so true. Depression's a hell of a thing. When you're depressed--I mean, really, totally, absolutely lost in it--seeking out positive solutions to your problems just seem impossible. You could have access to all the best therapy and meds in the world, but to a severely depressed person, they may as well be on Mars.

This is where family, friends, and a good medical community come into play for the patient. Depression patients need a support group--even if it's one cobbled together in the form of group therapy--to get them on the road to self-recovery.

Unfortunately, Chris doesn't have any of these resources right now. We all know how Barb views mental health, based on her insisting to mainstream Chris. Chris has no real friends to speak of, aside from Anna, and I doubt she's going to be the one to encourage him to change anything positive in his life. And we already know he's not going to therapy.

In short, it's going to take a massive sea change in Barb's psychology to have a positive effect on Chris in the short term. The best case scenario is some sort of authoritarian intervention in Chris's life, hopefully from the Department of Social Services. But as others have outlined in other threads, that's looking increasingly unlikely.

Don't know if Chris thinks that getting a PS4 with games in it will make him happy. From the sounds of this, even with all the vidya out there, they'll never be enough to make him happy.

I'm sure he wants a PS4, and that it would cheer him up for a while. But we all know that it's not a viable long-term solution. At its best, it's a momentary distraction. At its worst, it increases his isolation and makes him even more antisocial.

Chris probably thinks his main problem is not having a girlfriend, that is the only thing he cares about, he doesn't really care about his health, or learning about anything, his mind is like, "need Girlfriend, need to play video games and get trophies, need asspats!" those 3 things are all he desires. He's depressed because no girl wants him, and woman are BASICALLY PROMISED!!

Pretty much. Chris has identified a girlfriend/wife as the great solution to all of his ills. And quite frankly, it makes a certain amount of sense considering the media he digests. We all know that Chris gets a lot of his ideas from movies and cartoons, and that he's also a fan of romantic comedies--and how to they all end? With the guy and the girl proclaiming their love for each other, triumphant pop music blaring in the background, while they stare out at a setting sun. Roll credits.

And that's what Chris envisions. Get girlfriend, the movie ends. Happy ending. No more struggle. We'll be togedder forebber.

If there's one lesson that Kacey and Jackie tried to teach Chris, is that that's not how relationships work. There's a whole other person at the end of the equation. But Chris, being Chris, just didn't get it--and so he retains this infantile perception of relationships and conflict resolution.

That's it, that's it right there. Chris never, ever put effort into getting the life that he wants, he just spent years and years assuming it would happen on its own at some point. And reality eventually began slapping him in the face. That takes a toll when it happens for years on end.
