EDIT: I didn't realize that saying "C h r i s C h a n" would turn into "Our Pet Lolcow." I did not put "Pet Lolcow" on my assignment, just C h r i s C h a n."

So I did an essay for my Psych 201 class, and we had to make a super hero and describe parts of the brain that unlock those abilities. What better super hero than a Chris Chan one. I have sent this assignment in, and hopefully I will get some feedback on it:

Chris Chan: The Super Hero

Disclaimer: The following writing assignment maybe offensive to those who know of someone who has autism or mental issues. This assignment is not my view of making fun of autistic people, but to show the mental state of one autistic person in question. Everything being said is in truth from this one person, but shown in an exaggerated and detailed manner. For more information on Chris Chan, go to http://www.sonichu.com/cwcki/Main_Page.

By day, Christian Weston Chandler is a mild mannered, 30's something, functioning autistic human being. He plays with Lego's, unlocks large amounts of trophies on the PlayStation Network, and works on his never ending web comic, Sonichu. But by night, Christian turns into his alter ego, Chris Chan, defender of other autistics and Sonic The Hedgehog fanboys around the world. His fashion style of choice is his lucky striped shirt, which is added with his custom made medallion of his comic book creation, Sonichu. The common enemies of Chris Chan include people who troll him and other autistics on the internet, people with Aspergers (which he claims are his mortal enemies and “fakers” of those who have autism: http://sonichu.com/cwcki/Asperger), and people who own the local comic book shop, which he fully believes is the secret hideout of all of his enemies and foes.

Chris Chan super abilities are, but not limited to, being racist towards black people who have hot white girlfriends, turning women away from him when he tries to “advance” on them, his stuttering speech ability, being an extremely prideful individual to his way of thinking (and his ONLY WAY), and getting funding from the government for being “disabled.” To break down these abilities and how they would function with his brain, lets start with the racism ability. When Chris sees that a beautiful woman (or how he would call “his sweetheart”) is with an intimidating person outside of his race (which is mostly African Americans), Chris gets feelings of insecurity and intimidation. Chris develops these feelings in the brain which is triggered by serotonin when Chris sees his “maybe potential” mate with a larger, intimidating, alpha male, which generates a depressing feeling in Chris Chan's soul of despair. Once this occurs, Chris gets aggressive thoughts and gets his testosterone going, which is still caused by the serotonin, as he goes to confront someone who is much bigger and stronger physically than Chris. Once Chris confronts the colored alpha male by going on a tangent on why he has an attractive female companion, the offender can only interpret that Chris is just a sad, pathetic and flabby individual. Most of these conflicts end with Chris Chan getting punched in the face, or escorted off the premisses by security. Still, Chris Chan never gives up on love, and continues onward.

Another ability is his failed, fly style with the ladies. When Chris Chan scopes a potential “Boyfriend Free” mate in the wild, it triggers the hypothalamus of the fore brain to indicate that a “potential” female, “boyfriend free,” mate is ahead. With Chris Chan's sights set on his feminine desire, he gains the courage to approach the female, as his cerebrum has Chris thinking of all the one liners he learned from pornography videos and random episodes of The Pickup Artist, which have been stored in Chris's association area of his brain. Once Chris approaches the female, he is once again foiled by his other autistic super ability that has disabled the left hemisphere of his brain, which the female can only hear mumbles of broken English coming out of Chris mouth in an inaudible manner. Because of this super ability in action, the female quickly runs away from Chris Chan, to either the nearby food court or to her boyfriend in the local Hot Topic store. By the time Chris realizes what happened, he is forced to retreat with large amounts of serotonin overcoming all brain functions in his skull, which he will then retreat in depression to Gamestop to by more Little Big Planet plushes.

At this time, there is no normal human on the planet who can help Chris Chan with this autism or abilities. Chris looks at his autism as a superpower, and refuses to get any kind of treatment or help from the outside to change that. With his other superpower of receiving disability insurance from the federal government from what he calls “tugboat money,” he finds no reason or way to change his ways to better himself and to lose his super human abilities.

There are plenty of insightful essays that could be written about Chris for a psychology class, but this wasn't one of them.

Well, since you guys are whining so much, this was the format:

1. Identify your super human (hero).
2. Identify the super ability of your super human (hero).
3. Identify the brain area(s) and function(s) associated with individual’s super human (hero) sensory ability. (Be specific in identifying the brain structure and its function)
4. Identify something that a normal individual can do to improve their brain functioning. (Be sure to mention the ability being improved and the associated brain structure.)

And if you guys think you can do better... please, be my guest. This is an open thread for anyone else's essays on Chris, so have at it.

When I clicked on this topic, I was hoping to find an insightful, scholarly essay on the subject of Chris. I must say, I was sorely disappointed. What exactly was that? I'm in full agreement with Niachu. Hardly Psych 201 material.

Okay. May I ask the school you are attending and the subject you're majoring in? Like the others, I have to agree that your assignment is in no way appropriate for a psych 201 course. This is not meant to come off as an insult or attack, but I am more than a little curious.

If this essay has made me realise one thing; it's the death of education. Please don't tell me this is a college level course.

When I clicked on the topic, I was expecting an insightful essay reflecting on the state of Chris' psyche and world views juxtaposed with the rest of the world, as well as what could lead him to be the way he is now. I love that sort of analysis. I was really, really disappointed.

With all due respect, I've written middle school papers more in-depth than this. I've written high school papers more in-depth than this. I've written more in-depth chemistry 121 reports, let alone Psych 201. If I were to hand in engineering work similar to this I'd be laughed out of the major. Considering what my friends who are psych majors have to do, I have an extremely hard time believing this is Psych 201 material. I don't mean to sound offensive or to take a personal shot at you, but I really think that you might want to think this more thoroughly for the sake of your grade.

Welp, I hope that at this stage the teacher wants rough drafts so you can have a chance to listen to feedback. If not, I really hope the teacher's lenient. I might be able to lead you in the right direction if I had time, but I'll tell you to look at the Excel Saga page for the type of in-depth analysis that would make a paper on Chris interesting. I really hope that at some point in college I have an opportunity to write such an essay on Chris. I'm going to be majoring in Professional Writing, so I'm not sure what sort of topics I'll be assigned. I can say for sure that if there's ever a chance to write about Christian, I definitely will take it.

I don't think Chris was the best choice for this essay and it's likely you'll have to rewrite it with a new topic.
The assignment sounds like it has more to do with creating your own superhero, not using a character that exists and ironically explaining his "abilities". A hero is someone who has outright admirable qualities. Plus, it reads like it has a strong bias against the character, which is not ideal for essays, which are supposed to be neutral in tone while the facts point the reader in the direction of the argument you want. It also seems like the essay was more geared towards neurology and brain structure than creative writing.

Example of what I'm guessing your professor wants: SuperBob can read minds. This ability would likely be found in the mirror neurons and Vernicke's area. (It's been over a year since I took Neurosci so I'm probably totally wrong, but this is just an example and I'm not in your class so blaaah).

Creative idea, but the execution and context is lacking a bit.

(looks at everyone's comments...)

BWWAAAAHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Ok... let me clarify a few things, which is more than likely errors on my end. I should have never typed the word "essay", because what I wrote clearly isn't. This assignment is more of an exercise my teacher made to see if we understood functions of the brain from what we have learned so far in class. so it can go from a paragraph of something simple to however long you wanted it to be, just something fun to do. I decided to make Chris the main protagonist of the story because it was something easy that I could use and work with, and thought "well, why not share it with other fans of Chris Chan?"

So for those who thought this was some overly perfect piece of writing that the world has ever seen, I am sorry to disappoint. Actually, i'm not sorry at all, because I am finding these reactions of your OCD critiquing comments to be amusing to me. And for those of you who say "I've seen better," please post them on here, I would love to see them. That was the intent of this thread to begin with, because I don't think there's an essay type thread on this site. I really don't care if the're much better than what I wrote that some of you hold in high regard, but that just makes me think of "why would someone want to waste good writing talent on Chris? I guess this is something I would have to see."

Man, you guys can bitch and moan, but I guess that is what makes up a good 95 percent of the internet now days. So in short, my bad, chill out, and move on.

I'm still not even seeing evidence of that. Is that supposed to be collegiate-level writing? Essay or not, it wasn't well written in the least. Laugh off the criticism if you want to, but half-assing some writing just because it's not an essay isn't a good way to treat school assignments, especially college ones.

Compared to what I saw other students write, I think I will be ok.

Like I said, this is a simple assignment. You are more than welcome to show other pieces of writing about Chris Chan, since that was my intended purpose of this thread to begin with.
