Forgive me if this has already been explored.

I was reading the latest update from Thetan about Chris being bullied during HS and it reminded me of a question I had way before. To say that Chris seems to have a poor memory would be an understatement. But does anyone know why Chris' memory seem to be so shitty?

Is there a psychological reason? Some sort of un-diagnosed mental disease or disorder?

Is it because of his Autism?

Is it because :stupid:? And if so can stupidity and/or cognitive ability affect your memory?

Or is Chris simply so self absorbed and delusional that he always changes history in his mind to fit what he wants?

Probably all of the above, I know that I whitewashed some details of high school myself, but I didn't go into total delusions of being a popular kid hanging out with the ladies. Of course, for Chris, he's known to mix some fiction into reality.

Simplest answer: Chris has an excellent memory on the subjects he actually cares about: Pokemon and Family Guy. He refuses to put any brainpower into any other subjects, which is why he's almost unable to speak intelligently.

So, like everything else, Chris's shitty memory is the result of autism spiked with laziness.

He's just really selective.

Example: Chris keeps giving different, more absurd accounts of the Nathanael Greene incident all of which paint him as the victim and the school principal and faculty as being autism-hating monsters. I personally believe the incident is mostly Chris' fault (he threw a tantrum in class and was taken to the principal's office where it got worse) and ever since doesn't want to acknowledge he was in the wrong.

His early memories aren't his as much as they are Borb's memories that he parrots back. As far as the gal pals and such, he has no sense of social situations, so from his perspective, he was the one single guy hanging out with a bunch of hot chicks. While most of us would look at that situation and say "Hmm... He must be gay", Chris looks at it and says, "Hm, yeah, I coulda had, I coulda had my pick of da ladies back den if only I were not so NAIVE ABOUT DATING!"

Now of course, his delusions have been shattered, which is really for the best for all parties concerned.

I would echo with some of the earlier responses and say it mostly all boils down to selective memory for Chris. Instead of looking at past situations and thinking, "What did I learn from that," and improve from previous experiences, he instead decides to say, "How can I make this look like I'm the good guy," or more recently, "How can I use this to derive more pity?" Of course, those are kinda big words for Chris to "think," but you get the idea.

His memory is probably no worse than average. If his recollections of his past are warped, it's because he misunderstood/misinterpreted the world and events involving and around him as they happened, so his memories were faulty from the day they were recorded.

Either that, and/or he's so used to trying to make himself look better, or look more victimized, with his exaggerations, half-truths, revisionism, or outright lies that he's no longer really aware he's doing it at all, and he actually believes them now.

Chris has tweaked just about every recollection he has ever shared. Keeping track of all his delusions probably just makes him crash into slumber.

Chris' own explanation of it was Random Access Memory (RAM as in Chris' misguided version of it and not like in an actual computer), but that's probably just caused by the 'tism.

Autistic people tend not to have great short-term memory, but great long-term memory.

Likewise, I learned in Psychology class (which instantly makes me a professional on this I know) that most of the 'facts' you attribute to a memory are either removed or made up. Ones memory is not perfect.

Chris's memory just makes me think of that "Fishsticks" episode of South Park. They gave a really good description how I think Chris's mind works in regard to remembering an event. I can't remember the exact words, but it was basically that a person's ego can be so big that they'll subconsciously remembers things incorrectly to make themselves feel more important.

I'm pretty sure there's more to it than just autism that Chris claims he suffers from. Whatever they are, you name it. :p

Effortpost incoming:

I think his autism is a big part of it. Chris has a lot of difficulty understanding and empathizing with others; he seems to lack the ability to put himself in their shoes. But he understands his own thoughts and motivations quite well. That's why we get things like Chris's versions of the incidents at Fashion Square Mall and PVCC. In his mind, it seems perfectly logical to set up a sign telling women you want to date them if you're too shy to approach them - he lacks the social intelligence to understand how other people interpret his sign, or the motivations they ascribe to him, or why women wouldn't read his sign and come talk to him about hooking up (hell, quite a few neuroptypical guys seem to see women as strange unknowable alien creatures or as sex vending machines that intermittently emit loud, annoying noises). In Chris's mind, he was behaving rationally, and the irrational ones are the security guards and deans who can't understand his thought processes. Now, maybe if he'd been raised better, he'd know that he should shut up and listen when those authority figures try to explain what he did wrong (and I'm fairly certain even the security guards would have if he didn't immediately start acting up when they approached) but instead he was raised to believe that he was special because of his autism and other people should just let him do his thing.

Anyway, my point is Chris remembers things a certain way because either 1. that's how he experienced them ("I was attacked for no reason by jerkops in brown at the mall!") or 2. because he knows it's false, but because he lacks the ability to accurately imagine what others are thinking, he thinks he can lie and no one will see through it ("I had tons of internet gal pals who wanted to give me china!").

Chris remembers the past pretty well, it's just that what he remembers is filtered through his mind to be self-serving (I doubt they held him down to record his screams at Nathaneal Greene Elementary School, and I'm pretty certain the principal was not a retard-hating pedophile).

Like others have said, his memory's about as sound as anyone who's selectively remembered everything for the last fifteen-some years.

Nowadays, he remembers things only because he's repeated them enough: his hatred of men and gays; the Nathanael Greene incident; his elysian high school days; his loving parents. When those memories get totally annihilated by reality, he won't have anything left.
