Over the years watching Chris' online hijinks, we've seen his
money go towards a lot of unnecessary, luxury purchases. Chris seems to buy every new video game console that Sony and Nintendo release, and he buys them full price at launch before any price drops. Chris also owns and constantly carries 2 Apple devices, even though his iPhone renders his iPod touch useless since they both do essentially the same things. The preferred Tomgirl makeup brand, Sephora, is a high end line that's considerably more expensive than the kind of stuff working women buy for themselves at drug stores. Generally, when it comes to things that Chris buys for enjoyment or entertainment, high cost is a minor obstacle.
This lifestyle has had a number of effects on Chris and his living situation. Although he eats out at McDonald's a lot, it seems Chris designates very little money to his diet. For all we know his entire nutrition consists of low end fast food, frozen fried chicken, microwave pizzas and orange Fanta. When Bob and Barb went to Riley's after Bob's appointment, notice how Barb refrained from ordering expensive "sit-down restaurant" food and revealed the q-sand to the world. The "Riley's" e-mail also clues us in to how poorly the Chandlers maintain their vehicles. I'd imagine that routine maintenance is often forgotten or just neglected by Chris and Barb. At some point Chris' vehicles will be beyond repair, and he'll be left with no vehicle at all.
Sometimes Chris just can't produce enough money to get what he wants, too. Remember the CVS netbook Chris had his eye on? He only wanted it because it was hundreds of dollars less than a real laptop and he assumed it was upgradable (it wasn't). That was $99 of his tugboat completely down the drain, unless he still occasionally uses it to lurk our boards on the toilet or something. With Barb's health on the decline and the Grim Reaper clearly not an honest bargainer, Chris will most likely be 100% responsible for himself in the very near future. Do you think he can learn to budget and perhaps start saving money for more responsible purposes? Does it bug you that Chris blows so much money on toys and crap?
