About six months ago I picked up a bottle of cider on a whim, and really liked it. So I explored on.

Most of the stuff I've tried from Angry Orchard is pretty good, with the exception of their Granny Smith brand. Smith & Forge, Woodchuck (especially the pear!) and Johnny Appleseed are also really good. So far the only real clunker has been Longbow. Way too dry, sour and astringent for my tastes.

Any suggested brands?

Living in Portland, there is a sizable market for cider along with Oregon's already big market for craft beer. I'm a big fan of Atlas Cider Company (they make a fantastic semi-sweet apricot cider) and Square Mile Cider, which is nice and dry for my tastes.

Eventually, I want to start making my own home-brewed cider because it will be a LOT cheaper in the long run. There is a really simple recipe for German style cider (apfelwein) that I want to try next spring.

Recently got into McKenzies, its from Buffalo NY, it isn't bad, available in 21 states; another one which is a bit sweeter is Sommersby, its from somewhere in Europe but its sweet, I always feel the need to brush my teeth after drinking it.

Bulmers Original is probably the best cider I've ever had. It's really light in alcohol but it's got a deep, musty taste that really touches on the spicy fall apple harvest. It's not sour or overly sweet but has a taste of almost sweet, baked apples.

Sweden is fucking crazy about cider, so all the other brands I drink are Swedish and pointless.

EDIT: If you happen to have some gold rum left over in a bottle, though, adding an ounce to a glass of chilled cider is heaven. Rums with a vanilla note (such as Christ-Chan favorite Bacardi Oakheart, which also carries just a touch of oaky, semi-whiskey-like, goodness) goes great with pear while deeper flavours (or especially anything with a note of cinamon) goes heavenly with a deep, autumny apple cider

Angry Orchard has recently been finding its way on supermarket shelves in the UK, and I was wondering: is this a typical flavour for alcoholic cider in the US? It tastes very unusual compared to what I am used to - a little bit of a cordial edge, sweeter than usual, and with less of a dry alcohol flavour.

Angry Orchard isn't the standard but I wish it was. Good Cider from Spain has the sweet and not dry style of Angry Orchard but tastes much much better. A lot of it around here is bitter and caustic to your mouth and hipsters use it to clean their beards with it.

I like cider a lot, every time I see a new one available at Trader Joe's I pick one up but unfortunatly they all kind of blend together in my mind. I had a Strongbow (I assume that's what OP means?) recently at a potluck and found it pretty nice, though I do kind of like sour-ness in my beers. Only thing I drink other than ciders and labmic (and the occasional mead) is sour ale.
Angry Orchard is always a good pick, I like their Crisp Apple varient the most. Newton's Folly is also good, I've added it to soup before.
Dan Armor and Ace are also tasty picks, I like to pair them with a meat and cheese platter and pretend that I'm classy.
I was impressed recently by Rekordelig, a Swedish Pear Cider. It's very sweet, though.

Woodchuck is my go-to for cider.

I love Rekordelig, but yeah it's super sweet and very fizzy. It's better as a dessert drink becasue it's almost soda-like. I've had the pear, mango+raspberry, and mixed berry flavors and liked them all.

Another recommendation I have for the sweeter ciders is Wyders Prickly Pineapple. Pineapple and Prickly Pear(cactus fruit) goes really good, not the sweetest but a million miles from sour or bitter.

A bar manager got me hooked on a black and tan like combination of Left Hand brewery's milk stout plus a local semisweet cider. Sounds vile, is fantastic.

I got a whole canister of local cider from the farmers market today. 10l for 15€. they are real in a tight spot right now because all gathering where Cider is drunk are cancelled.
I also got 2 bottles of elderberry juice to mix it with.

Elderberry juice and cider sound delish. I must try that.

Rekordalig is way too sweet for me, every variety I've had was too much like syrup for me. The Australians made a decent cider named Strongbow. They do a good dry and draught ciders. Their sweet one is also okay, they have a blossom rosé cider that I'm yet to try.

I'd like to make my own one of these days. Much like wine making and beer brewing it's on my list.
