Did anyone see his recent video where visited the last Blockbuster video?

This might be an unpopular opinion but while I remember mom and pop VHS rental places and they were certainly interesting, Blockbuster was simply a nicer experience that I have more nostalgia for.

It really weirds me out though that Blockbuster is now this big bygone thing people wax nostalgic for the way I remember people in the past waxing nostalgic for malt shops or drive ins.

Like, am I really that old enough for something I used to visit all the time being this nostalgic bygone thing?

If anything rental stores are justified in being nostalgic for, being an event happening every so often where most people went with their families. It certinely beats most modern nostalgia that is either conoomables or un-social.

For me it was always the ritual. Every Friday Mom and I would go to the local rental place and pick out a game for the weekend. That was awesome. That being said, there are still rental places around here (Family Video), but the thrill is gone.

Blockbusters and video stores in general weren't nearly as fun as people remember them/pretend to remember them.

I used to rent video games at Blockbuster all the time when I was a little dude too, but it wasn't as much of a nostalgia thing for me; it was just an ordinary task like shopping or getting dinner. Like, I'm friends with movie buffs IRL who geek out over Blockbuster video (or video rentals in general) nostalgia, but it's not that big of a deal for me. I'm more nostalgic for the video games themselves, or the experience behind them...like playing them at my aunt's house.

The only way that AVGN can go beyond mediocre these days is if James actually covers something he's passionate about. Not just giving a shit, I mean actually caring about what he's talking. Stuff like Nintendo Power and the Castlevania restrospective are still rewatchable as hell and Dick Tracy pretty much works because it being a personal shit game from childhood and him really knowing how to highlight what he doesn't like makes for some good entertaining.

Modern AVGN episodes where he really gives a shit like Earthbound and Majora's Mask still have cringe moments and forced anger, but James's opinion really influenced the script of these for the better and it shows. When the Earthbound review got to the Giygas part and the fetus theory I was like "oh shit, here we go, he'll probably make an unfunny fetus joke" but he ended up giving a lot of genuinely interesting insight on how he interpreted the themes of the final boss. I also may have disagreed with a lot of the stuff he said about Majora's Mask, but since he actually gave more than a shit he felt way more articulate about it rather than just raging because he thinks he's supposed to do so.

I don't really blame him for not wanting to give a shit at this point, though.

The iPhone's lack of buttons is sometimes inconvenient? What a hot take from 2007. Guess they can't all be winners.

I'm curious what the story is about not being able to say "bullshit" at the beginning of the video. Anyone know anything more about that?

You know what's bullshit? Censoring Bullshit with BS.

Youtube potty mouth word censorship and sponsors notwithstanding, I'm 100% with James on this. Especially since watching porn on the phone is a fucking minefield of not accidently hitting share on a new tab because you only have one hand.
There's too much Cinemassacre video in my Ridge Wallet ad.

My problem with those kind of wallets is that they belong in some futuristic coin-less human society.

It also happens with the latest Zero Punctuation video so Youtube might be shotgunning themselves in the foot to appeal to advertisers (for the n-th time).

Anyone who's insane enough to buy Apple products doesn't reserve the right to complain, I say.

I swear to God the internet has become neutered beyond repair when the AVGN can't even say bullshit anymore on his own video.
And yet he still said it at the very end? What the fuck?

Ironically enough the rental review about a show that exists to sell shit isn't sponsored. It's a pretty nice episode to listen to and I kinda want to watch the opening of the film. Also hhhmmmmm Porkchop sandwiches....

That's pretty much how I feel too. I've never been much of a movie guy, so my memories of video stores came down to renting video games every Wednesday since they had 99 cent 2 day rentals, but the selection was kind of shit and a lot of the best titles were rented out already. If you wanted anything new, TS. So I ended up renting shit I'd never play otherwise like Chester Cheetah's Too Cool to Fool and Tecmo's Secret of the Stars. And then I got a Playstation, and you'd have to pray the CD isn't too scratched up to play, which happened to me more than once.

TV shows on VHS were very rare unlike DVDs, too, so video stores wouldn't usually have those either.

I dunno, they just seemed to be frustrating more often than not. I guess if you're really into movies and you're not picky, then yeah, video stores were great. But it just sucked hard seeing something you'd really like to play, only to see not a single rental case behind it, indicating they had a copy in stock. And IIRC they never carried more than 2 copies of any game, either. Or at least that was the case at my local place.

My parents never had a Blockbuster account, so I never went there until I was an adult to browse through their going-out-of-business sale.

YouTube has some unclear rule various creators have talked about where you're not allowed to cuss in the first part of the video, since so many people watch part of one and then click off and move on. The common consensus seems to be it's around the first 30 seconds.
