I think I can answer why Matt dated Ashley, Matt wasn't always as racist as he is now. Matt's been steadily going farther and farther right, when he was dating her, he was not a neo nazi. He was far right then, but I'm not certain how racist he was at that point exactly. It is the war flag that was used by Germany during WW1, a common substitute flag some neo-nazis like use in public and at rallies instead of the Third Reich one because of obvious reasons. It also have Prussian connections/origins in its design, which is an another neo-nazi favorite. So really, carrying one of those to an anti-Communist rally is as shifty as it gets. (I can not see what else would be the purpose?)

I think it's really interesting that CK mentions that she dated Matt "half a decade ago". By my own estimation they both are 24 years old and that would have made them 18/19 years old around the time that they dated. The documentary and SPLC profile on him imply that he's been doing Nazi and white supremecist stuff since he was around 18 or 19 years old.

Basically, for anyone actually paying attention to the details here, he most certainly WAS a Nazi while they were dating and she either chose to ignore it or he was incredible at hiding it from her. If he did manage to keep it from her and that was the reason they broke up, I genuinely sympathize with her, but still... it seems blatantly obvious that he's a Nazi, dude.
