Concept albums that don't suck -

So I'll preface this with im stoned.

Talking Heads album 77. The story flows from mania to mania from childhood to douchy investment banker to total psycho. Also I'm never quite sure which came first. This album or Bret Eastin Ellis books w American Psycho

Racebannon satans yr dick in is awesome. This dude is a failing wannabe musician and somehow makes a deal with the devil to be a big star. And so he was. Except as a really hot woman that eventually succumbs to sex drugs and rock n' roll.

Atmospheric and what not.

Do you have a favorite concept album that doesn't blow?

Nine Inch Nails: The Downward Spiral
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
Beatles: Sgt. Pepper
Neutral Milk Hotel: ITAOTS

Pretty obvious choices really. Most of the concept albums I like are famous largely because they are concept albums.

Honorable mention
Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime

Iced Earth's The Glorious Burden is a sweet metal album that covers great moments in military history. The Gettysburg trilogy at the end covers each day of the Battle of Gettysburg and is fucking epic.

If you like metal and history it's an amazing album.

Depends on what you mean by a concept album, do you mean unified themes or a narrative?

Weezer - Pinkerton (loose)
Randy Newman - Good Old Boys
The Who Sell Out
Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express
The Kinks - The Villiage Green Preservation Society
Moody Blues - Days of Future Past (if you can forgive the horrible bookend poetry)
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway

One of my favorite albums of recent years. It's meant to document three different prehistoric eras (triassic, jurassic, and cretaceous) as a "journey through the mesozoic era." I'm not exactly sure what Ceres and Calypso, the seal and the girl respectively, have to do with anything, but it doesn't matter. You can feel millions of years passing you by as you listen to it. Illicit substances optional (although certainly recommended.)

Dude good looks on Candy Claws. I used to always play their first album when I needed to study or fall asleep. Glad to see they are making music still.

As for concept albums
Protest the Hero - Kezia (Story about a chick who is being executed)
The Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium (Story about a guy who goes into a coma while OD'ing on rat posion and mophine)
Motoro Faam - And Water Cycles (Story of water) ((Drop some LSD or shrooms for this to be honest)
The Dear Hunter - Act I,II,III,IV (A multiple album story about a boy growing up)
Ovid's Withering - Scryers of Ibis (Greek myths done in the style of BRUTAL TECHNICAL DEATH METAL)

I'm gonna go a bit more modern and go with all the Coheed & Cambria albums besides "Color Before The Sun" since that one is outside the "Amory Wars" cycle. Particularly "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: III" and "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV".
The Dear Hunter - Act I,II,III,IV (A multiple album story about a boy growing up)
The Dear Hunter is one of my favorite projects. So much better than his old band.

Whoa man don't be throwing around insults like that at TREOS. Their two albums are fucking fire.
Plus the first album is a concept album (albeit a rather abstract one based on Shakespeare or something),

I didn't say they were bad I just said TDH is way better. And they are, because they aren't generic post-hardcore.
