Contemporary underground country, folk/americana, and bluegrass thread - Redneck music that isn't just pop music disguised by a southern accent

Just bought a ticket for the Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers 2020 tour which inspired me to make this thread.

So I feel like we're in a new golden age for country and folk music, however you will never hear this music on the radio. Some of the best music ever in these genres has come out in very recent years. And I think it's only gonna get better.

Discuss and recommend more because I just cant get enough of this stuff!

I'm not super up-to-date on particularly contemporary stuff, but I can offer a few recommendations that you might not have heard, barring one which got unusually popular. I suppose most of the OST for Flame and the Flood would count as contemporary, though. The last one definitely doesn't but fuck it, I love old Americana music and the Sweptaways don't get enough credit for that rendition.

I'm Incredibly down for this! I only really discovered "folk Americana" in the last 6 months. I grew up around Country music but always found the stuff on the Radio to be insufferable and boring. finding the Lost dog Street band on Youtube led me down a rabbit hole.

Don't know if this last one counts, but it's a dude slinging a Mandolin in a backyard.

The Toadies have changed their style. Their remake of "Tyler" is amazing.

16 Horsepower turned up in the 90's. They may still be active.

Also, Oldtime >> Bluegrass.

Here's two Canadian country singers.

Corb Lund focuses on Western and war (particularly cavalry) themes. I don't care for the first song on this album much, but the rest of the album is interesting, especially My Saddle Horse Has Died, Student Visas, A Leader on Losing Control, I Want to Be In the Cavalry: Reprise, and Lament for Lester Cousins.

The other one is Colter Wall, who in particular has done lots of songs about Western Canada (cowboy culture) and Appalachia.

Awesome song by Corb Lund ( Alberta,Canada) and Hayes Carll (Texas) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S00y75ebq8

These guys are fantastic. And though you can't tell in this vid, the chick is fucking smokin'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9jwGansp1E

Then of course, there's the original HellBilly, Hank3, grandson of Hank Williams (and his granddaddy's doppelganger) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPBE4yFFlnA&list=RDcPBE4yFFlnA&start_radio=1

Was about to link both of these. Colter Wall has genius lyrics behind the music too. My favorite of his is Ballad of a Law Abiding Sophisticate:

Corb also focusses hard on gamblin', veterinarians, and rodeo. But I agree that Horse Soldier!! is his best!

Just found this dude today, WOW.

Yeah, he's incredible. Check out "I'm using agin". He's fantastic.THIS is where country should have gone to, instead of stupid shit about a fake America that never existed, and shouldn't.

This guy is from the part of Quebec I love most. And he's fantastic:

So very glad to have seen him at my local pub so very many times.

Also, Shovels and Rope are fantastic.

This may very well be the best lovesong I've ever heard. Even the way they look at eachother. What a team!

And here's Cary Anne with Hayes Carll. Awesome song. Great lyrics. Because booze and fucking will transcend politics every time. LMAO. John Prine and iris Dement eat you heart out.

Thank you for this thread.

I'm going to avoid powerleveling, but I will say that my current existence exposes me to a lot of country music, and majority of it is pop country like Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, and Blake Shelton... just a lot of safe country songs from scruffy white guys trying to be a good boyfriend, and songs from white girls, many of whom are usually pissed off and/or finding complacency in being trashy. It's all very Nashville-formulaic and mind numbing.

A few months ago however by mere chance I did stumble across Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers and not going to lie it was probably some of the best shit I've heard in years. I hope this continues to make a resurgence, but at the same time, I hope it remains unapologetically radio unfriendly because I really don't want Nashville CEOs to catch on and then have someone like Chris Janson or Thomas Rhett try to duplicate it.

First heard this guy today.

Also here's one of my favorite vic chestnut songs. Not super recent being from the 2000s, but he's one of my favorites. Normally I dont care about public figures passing on but his death really bummed me out.

Can an actual human be your waifu? This gal is AMAZING! Seriously one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, this is real music.
