I’ve often thought of a lovecraft community thread. I have read lovecraft myself, his work has inspired TONS of modern fantasy, horror and fiction. And for some reason, the spergy fans of lovecraft seem to think his work, as well as cosmicism, can be found in almost anything.

But it’s really not that funny of a community. They just show up on random wikia pages and say “ L O V E C R A F T “ but that’s it. Mildly annoying, minimally entertaining

And before @Cthulhu tentacle fucks my mind, I do enjoy Lovecraft but the fans are really crazy about trying to find his influence in every fucking thing. Can't people just enjoy something with out it taking over their lives.

Fandoms aren't worth shit, doesn't matter what fandom its for, if you want to talk about something with other people who enjoy it, talk to the fans, not the fandom.

Lovecraft is entertaining to read and his stories are ghoulish and fun, I recommend The Shadow over Innsmouth and at the Mountains of Madness.

That's a valid interpretation of it. He wrote the "lore" open-ended so other writers could continue his loose threads, which is pretty much a meme.

The thing in that strip about Lovecraft not describing his horrors is kind of bs - he does the 'the indescribable' schtick in his earlier stories, partly as I recall in deference to something Dunsany and some other earlier writers, but later on he gives extensive descriptions.

there's at least like five different Lovecraft fandoms out there.

1. the purist fans (aka the true patricians) who only accept the canonical status of the short stories, poems, prose, and novellas written by Lovecraft himself
2. the purist+ fans who also accept the canonical status of the related works produced by all the other contemporary Lovecraft collaborators from the 1920s-30s (ie, during Lovecraft's lifetime)
3. the "no-standards" fans who accept the canonical status of all the fanfic-tier anthologies and shitty self-published novels produced by all third-party writers since the 1940s (ie, after Lovecraft's lifetime)
4. the RPG/tabletop fans who are mainly concerned about all those Chaosium RPG rulebooks; this group runs the whole gamut, from the casual video game adaptation fans to the HPLHS crew that makes quality feature-length movie adaptations and radio-plays of Lovecraft stories and novels
5. the memey "fake nerd" fans who have only been exposed to the most surface level lore via youtube videos and webcomics, and probably never read a single story and think the Lovecraft Mythos revolves around Cthulhu (hint, it does not)

IMO, Fandoms 1,2, and 4 are not especially cancerous. The true autism nexus swirls around 3 and 5
